The new defense system is largely in place; I have created two 'roach-trap' style series of cage traps where invaders attempt to path to a caged animal and run through a series of cage traps. That should suffice for most. The only real problem we're likely to have on defense is letting wagons in; we've done without it, though, after all that Dwarven caravan
had no wagons and they carried all those delicious supplies, so we may not even need to worry about it. I created another keep to the south complete with sectioned-off fortifications, and the masons are currently working on a roof to stop fliers. Our position is strong, now we just need ranged Dwarves.
Food situation is stable, but with this many Dwarves we're going to be burning through it almost as fast as we can produce it (at the rate I was going anyway). Drinks should be no problem obviously, and the combination of mills, farms and fisheries supply our stocks quite well. I advise you focus on growing above-ground crops since they are much higher value than most underground ones; I've mostly ceased plump helmets, focusing on wheat, which means flour, and pig tails/rope reed which means cloth. I got a huge coup from that caravan so we should be well stocked on leather and cloth for a good while, now we just need someone to actually turn it into goods
We have a prison as well. I have a few metal chains in there already, but you'll likely want to add more since the happiness level in the fort has been kind of tenuous lately (one person dies, big ripples everywhere). Give every military Dwarf a big house with a palatial bedroom for the happiness bonus. Kill any Noble who objects. Soldiers before government. The basic framework for the Mint I was talking about is up; all I really did was dig it out. My production capacity has been entirely focused on adamantine since there was so much of it to work with. I've split the military into the Fortress Guard who use crossbows, the Smashin' Boyz with the silver hammers, and the Choppa Boyz with the bladed/edged weapons, as well as a few others in reserve who do nothing but train. They still haven't got past Dabbling Swordsdwarf. *facepalm* One more thing, when you apply armor remember to mark it as 'Replace Clothing' because they might decide they want to wear their clothing instead of the adamantine armor.
I also built this.
We'll be ready for when the King comes. Also digging him out a tomb below that. Probably should have made it in the adamantine layers but w/e.
Depending on how evil you are feeling, you may want to do a little population culling -- our rate of births is going to cause us to hit the roof very, very soon. And if that happens we might not get the full retinue, which we WANT since they can be Legendary soldiers. Just starve the poor sods in a burrow or something. Above all, make sure it is !!FUN!!
