It depends, if you can independently get around and you don't want to drive... your loss I guess. Less people on the roads means more space for me on there. I personally love driving as an activity (think, long twisting mountain roads), and find it is extremely useful if not necessary for a lot of work and other things. (or put it this way. I have not yet had one job that i could have had without my drivers license and a car)

I got mine at 17.

If you're one of those people who always scabs rides from people though... man up and get a license and car.

I got my full license at 17 and 3 months (provisional (training) since 17). I could have worked without a drivers license, but visiting my parents would be a nightmare (they live in the middle of the countryside about an hour from the nearest train station and the only buses that stop are the school bus and the one that takes the old ladies shopping once a week).

One of my friends has no transport of his own at all, and lives with his parents in a similar village. He complains he doesn't see me often enough, but without transport of his own...

Don't be the guy stuck at home.

EDIT: (if you live in a city it's much less of an issue, there are always ways to get around in a city)

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

My brother is 33 and he doesn't have one yet :P.

He lives in Amsterdam though, so it'd be pretty pointless to have one anyway. It all depends on how good/affordable public transport is in your city/state/country.

I'm working to get my license and I'm 16. The only two problems I'm having is that the state I live in requires me to have at least 50 hours of experience jotted down onto a list, Ten of which have to be in the middle of the night. The other problem is the fact that when I make mistakes, I get told about what I was supposed to do. Whenever that happens, I feel like I shouldn't even try to get my license and just walk/bike everywhere.  :'(

How are they supposed to teach you how to drive if they do not point out your mistakes and tell you how to correct them?

Also your friends may consider it slightly rude that you're always riding around on their gas money, but that's nothing an occasional free meal can't fix.

Not in the least bit. If anything, I respect them MORE. Buses are environmentally friendly and for many other purposes, so much more respectable than driving around needlessly.

I acquired my license at around 16/17, took me three tries cause I am an absolute terrible driver.

Just so long as you're not constantly bumming rides of your friends.  I know someone that does that and it is damn annoying.  But if you really are managing with bike and bus that's fine and dandy becuase it is an efficient use of resources.  Some who dwell in urban areas need never get a license.
