I sent my entire Fortress police down there once, killed several forgotten beasts while they trained. Good times.

Vampires never level skills. Train them before converting them.
They don't level STATS.

just for emphasis. vamps level skills, just don't get stat gains

They do get a huge boost upon conversion to a vampire though (doubling of strength, agility, and toughness), so that the average dwarf ranks in not much lower then the legendary warrior levels in those categories.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Just wall the vampire in and fill the room with magma. This is the dorfy way of exile.

You forgot the part where you release the magma that dissolved the individual back into the magma sea.

I have a vampire in my fort somewhere. Once I locate it I'm going to train it in the military and send it to one of the caverns I discovered to see if I can train it to legendary status in all combat skills. This can't possibly go wrong.

Well, I use my vampire in military and he's quite good, but since he is "tired" (because he never drank blood) he is also significantly slower than other soldiers with comparable stats. Also, vampires do train skills, but also rust them, so if you leave him too long without practice he'll get worse.

Kujat: That's crazy! But in a good way and it sounds interesting! If only you could put all your children through physical stress at puberty to cull off the weak and feeble. There probably is a way, maybe having them fight badgers in pits or something.

That's horrific!...
I love it!

Trying to make a Sparta fortress, and already running into some problems.  I've divided my starting seven ( all peasants ) into two groups: Helots, and Citizens.  Those with the "flimsy" sort of trait, boom, you're a helot.  The others that have only minor stuff like clumsy, are in.

However, I don't really know how to divide these classes.  I want the Helots to toil on the surface, while the citizens build underground, and eventually become full time warriors.  Zoning doesn't help, it doesn't distinguish between dwarves.  How do I successfully segregate these two classes?

Forgive me for the railroad and possible bigotry.

Burrows and labors are probably your most useful tools.

Burrows...one of the many aspects of DF I haven't figured out yet.

Food chutes? What is this, exile or Bear Grylls's Man vs Wild with real food brought by the staff? Caverns have edible vegetation and fauna, the exiled ones should be given an axe so they can fell some treeshrooms and build a butcher's and tanners workshop, along with a farmer's workshop, a loom, and a clothier's workshop. If it's not a reclaim fortress, there is also mud, so they can farm.

Of course if it's a combat-centered activity, they should be military with all their clothing and food dumped from above, instead of growing it there.

Sparta fort =/= Exile fort.

Or Bear Grylls for that matter.
