Really need help testing my game!

-----UPDATE--- The problem is fixed.. It turns out I was being a complete idiot!

Hello! I'm making a game in Gamermaker 8. It all seems to be going well, but when I send it to my brother to test, he says the mouse pointer won't move, rendering the game unplayable. I've tried it on 5 computers 4 of which are win7, and one is xp, and none of them have a problem at all. I'm convinced somethings happening along the way to corrupt his version of the game but it' really irritating me now, so I would love to get some good people to test it for me.. My brother lives in another city btw, so I can't just go round his house and look what's going on.

Soooo, if there's anyone kind enough to test it I would be very grateful indeed, and will even include you in the credits when it's done. If I end up selling it, you'll get a free copy too. The project is still pretty young but I plan to complete it within a few months.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll pm you a link to my dropbox. It's a great game so far. Here are some details--

Title: Space Malarkey
Genre: Side scrolling shooter/point and click adventure with rpg elements

The finished game will have randomly generated missions and a simple free roaming galaxy. You'll be able to earn money during missions to buy new outfits and objects to decorate your house/ship.

before anyone says anything, he has been registered for a while and has had 2 other posts before this. That being said, it's not enough for me to trust downloading.

I understand totally.. I wouldn't either!

I'm not a frequent poster, but I do keep a close eye on this section of ther forum as it's a great source for finding good games.!

If there's anyone with particularly mighty antivirus willing to take the plunge, perhaps they could then vouch for me after they've tried it, but until then if there's anything I can do to prove myself, I'm all ears :)

Thanks! There'll be a lot more where they cam from, and will have a similar style. The missions will randomly choose your enemies, so you'll need to think on your toes about how to deal with the various combinations it throws at you.

Gamermaker

Gamemaker gives you exactly zero experience in actually making games. Also, it is completely unsuitable to anything except the absolutely simplest games.

Everyone has to start somewhere dude.  If nothing else, this'll teach the OP whether or not they can stick with a project.

I beg to differ! The main thing it robs you of is coding experience, and even that can be remedied by using GML. The knowledge of putting a good game together doesn't have to come from endless hours of hammering away at your keyboard. In fact, i think it'd be beneficial to dick around in Game Maker before haplessly throwing yourself at a huge C++ project, since you'll know how to put things together more efficiently.

I beg to differ once again! Iji and Battleships Forever are both made with Game Maker, and arguably have a production quality entirely on par with other popular indie games. It's supposedly also capable of 3D, but admittedly, it's far from optimal. I'm not a stranger to coding (though i'm not a pro either), i know how long it takes, which is why i love being able to do the same things in a tenth of the time with Game Maker. (spriting still takes forever but that's beside the point)

Also, i guess i could give it a quick testing. The screenshots tell me that it has a slightly dissonant art style (clouds --> aliens), but i'll hold my judgement till i see it in action. :U

Learning to make games with GM is about as relevant to creating them with non-heretical tools as construction from Lego blocks is relevant to engineering. Anybody who starts with GM will have to relearn everything from scratch for actual projects.

Yes, after long days of struggle you can do something playable, but what for, if any game of any complexity above a primitive platformer can be done much better and easier in a real programming environment?

Now that's just respectless. I have the utmost respect (and some admiration) for people who can manage a proper programming environment, but i'm not one of them. Does that make me an autistic 10 year old? No, and likewise does being a C/Lua/Python/HTML/Perl/Brainfuck pro not necessarily make you a reclusive neckbeard basement dweller. Negative stereotypes, broheim, don't use 'em. (also scripts are snippets of code, don't differentiate between them like they were day and night)

And what's your point? That i should dismiss games because of what they're made in, blatantly disregarding whether it's actually good or not? Sounds like a bad deal to me. My point is that you should check whether the game sucks or not before calling it. I don't give any amount of shits about what a game is made in as long as it's fun. (also if "good" is a measure of how much one likes a game then i could say SO MANY CAUSTIC THINGS)
This much i will grant you, however; there is an OVERWHELMING majority of shitty games being pumped out of Game Maker, but that's the users doing that. The users who are attracted by the increased accessibility compared to actual coding. Should they try their hands at coding the same game in, say, C++, chances are that they'd just flat out fail immediately. While this might be good for the potential audience, it's also rather frustrating, because it produces no playable results.

See, despite your rudeness, you do have something of a point. The problem here is that it's anything but easier to do in a so-called "real programming environment", and the patience of the budding developers. Learning an actual programming language takes a LONG time (tried Python, didn't work out [MAYBE because i was pre-pubescent]; later managed to get something of a hold of Lua out of necessity, and even later was confronted with the monster that is Assembler), and although i probably could, i don't have the patience to go through that process. Likewise does it take a gagillion years (slightly exaggerated) to actually program something that isn't a CMD.exe calculator. I know i'm a DF player, but Shook likes Game Maker for its user friendliness*.

Long story short: Ask yourself this: Is it terrible because it's made in Game Maker, or because the developer has the approximate ability and IQ of a doorknob on meth? (you are currently very tempted to say "both, one implies the other", but that is an illegitimate answer to the question)

HOWEVER. That isn't the purpose of this thread, and however wrong i may be, i don't think it's going anywhere good. I call peace before i lose my own temper.

* can sometimes be every bit as bitchy as coding

I have not noticed a link to the game. I guess I will not be able to playtest after all. And I was so looking forward to finding a lot of bugs. sigh.  :P
Also when I find them, should I just dump them in this thread or do you have some ticketing system set up?
