I just realized Imush is starting to look like what I think a French-Canadian fur trapper looks like

You could have cross the river and slept on the other side, doing so will allow the companion to cross the other side of the river upon waking up. though that wouldn't be as humorous, unless you got ambushed by crocs in your sleep.

I found that if you stubbornly cross the river and keep walking, your posse will gamely follow.  Some will try to fight a turtle and so drown.  Most will eventually pop up on the other side if you do a little back-n-forth riverdance.  I didn't figure this out until much later in the game than I've drawn.  I feel like the posse gets better at river crossing the more they do it, but, like so many things in this game, I can't tell if that's really the case or just my interpretation of the movements of lil' ASCII characters.  DF can be spooky that way.
