Gentrieve 2: A 3D Procedural Metroidvania Action Game
« on: June 18, 2012, 12:54:28 pm »

Hey fellow Bay12 gamers,

I'm hard at work on my new game, Gentrieve 2: http://gentrieve.wordpress.com/

Gentrieve 2 is going to be a 3D game, featuring randomly generated worlds, puzzles, enemies & weapons based heavily on the Metroid Prime series (with a mix of Descent in there, too!). I always loved the Super Metroid series, and I made the original Gentreve (https://sites.google.com/site/gentrieve/) inspired by it. Now with some 3D experience under my belt (http://3079.phr00t.com/), I hope to make a much more exciting and complete Metroidvania game -- completely procedurally generated, of course!

I made a blog post awhile back, giving an idea on how Gentrieve 2 goes about world generation: http://gentrieve.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/creating-procedurally-generated-rooms/

I really hope to not only have a cool game with good graphics, but to hold contests for "Speed Run" videos with prizes from raised money -- have a chance to give back to my fans and the community. :)

Early development screenshots:

Thanks guys!

Thanks man! I'm going to work on giving this game a much more tight-knit feel compared to my earlier games -- I've also learned lots about visual design, so it should just look much prettier too :P

Excellent and a good idea to shoot for a well-wrought Kickstarter this time around as well.  I'd also recommend taking steps to make sure it  plays well with FRAPS as well as CamStudio, as the former is pretty well the heavyweight champ and used by a great many folks.

Yup, I think that is going to be an important feature. I plan on having contests where people record the game and upload it to YouTube as an entry -- so that better work as intended  :P I linked to CamStudio since it is completely free.

How resource-heavy is CamStudio as opposed to FRAPS? I'd love to record some video Let's Plays, but FRAPS rendered even simple games virtually unplayable thanks to slowdown.

I haven't used either... running Linux, I just have a command-line script to record videos :P However, I do know that recording games can put a heavy strain on the machine. As a result, I'm designing Gentrieve 2 to have a low polygon count, with configurable effects & custom OpenGL shaders, which should make it run pretty smoothly even on slow (or strained) hardware. Also, trying to record at a slower frame rate (like, 15 or 20 FPS), might help performance (although the video will end up looking a little choppier).

Are you planning to have the map separated into various themed "sections" like in Gentrieve and Metroid? That's a great feature.

Yes indeed! For example, when you get the "lava suit", you will then be able to traverse the "hot" themed area (which will all be procedurally populated with rooms, lava pits, enemies etc.). Same goes for other items, like the grappling hook and other upgrades, which will have a procedurally generated section made.

Feature suggestion then, also given the video talk, as perhaps a stretch goal or some such:

Get in an ingame demo capability from saved seed/input recordings from others.   Emulators for classic platforms have this, and many of the classic FPS games of yore did as well to make it effective to be able to watch "a game" directly within the game itself, full-speed, and at sterling quality while keeping filesizes down for sharing and bandwidth purposes.

In other words, if it isn't something jME3 is already robustly capable of, time to revisit your tradition beget from 3079 and try to kick it into place for the good of all.   ;)

jME3 isn't already capable of it, although I would love to do it. It is easier for old games in which every frame can be rendered, and inputs can be synced to frames... might be tricky to sync Gentrieve 2 inputs across machines running the game faster/slower, but I will see what I can do.

Not necessarily thanking you for your brutal honesty, but I understand I need to spend more time on visuals. This is why I am trying to raise some money via KickStarter to pay for one (or two).

Dude, I LIKE you and I genuinely want you to succeed! I think to take the next step it is time for you to treat your games with the respect that the art form of vidya gamin' deserves.

Thank you and I'm working on it :D I hope to have up some more screenshots in a week or so, showing my progress. Putting lots of effort into visuals and room generation!
