Been away from DF for a few months...
« on: June 17, 2012, 05:31:15 pm »

How much has the game's difficulty changed since the release that added vampires and such? As I recall, the game suddenly had a huge jump up in difficulty, and arrows/crossbow bolts had ridiculous penetration power, on top of normal enemies being WAY harder to kill than they used to be. Is the game still like that, or has it gotten any easier?

Thanks!

1. More things outright kill you.
2. More things outright cripple you.
3. More things do things to you that's basically a death sentence.
4. Arbalests and their like still make European knights in full platemail cry at night.
5. There are more enemies to kill, and more ways to kill them. Likewise, more ways for them to kill you.

I'd say it's gotten harder, but more varied.

From what I've noticed, big groups are more dangerous (attacks from the side and back are really bad) and ettins et al don't tend to get their feet broken as easily as in DF2010. I also haven't been able to charge people down a cliff anymore, but you can still make them dodge off one.

You can throw people further when you wrestle them I think, but I haven't been able to roll anyone down a slope or throw them off a ledge.

It is pretty much unavoidable to have to kite groups around and melee one at a time, so you need to be careful and have a high speed. I've never been able to survive too many fights without first grinding dodger / armor user / blocker to legendary and getting my speed up to 1200+ in full armor.

Watch out in large towns, also. Hostile animal men can come up where sewers intersect a river, and in one market I went to, all the dwarves who came to sell their wares turned out to be hostile animated corpses. There are also zombies in random houses.

Just be careful out there, BoxOfAids. Happy hunting.

Sounds dangerous!

I was mostly just wondering how bad the grinding was. In DF2010, you could just grind a bit, then fight a few bandits out in the wilderness to get your skills up, and you didn't need to grind up skills at all unless you had to fight like master weapon users. In this new version, it seems like it's not safe to fight... well, anything without first getting quite a bit of fighting skills first.

Mostly my armor grinding is to get speed high enough to outpace large groups and not be overrun by rope reed-clad gangs. You could try with lesser stats but if your dude dies then it's more grinding for you. Companions are really useful now.

e: I forgot to mention that there is a lot of cool gear in fortresses where lords/ladies live now.

Sorry, off-topic, but it just gets to me when people use words like "platemail".

What? It's a perfectly acceptable compound noun indicating one wearing full layers of plate and mail armour. What's the fuss?
