Militia officers new job
« on: June 17, 2012, 02:37:07 pm »

How about giving militia officers a new job - inspections.  Every time a dwarf reports for active duty, the officer inspects them, and verifies they are equipped properly.  If not, the improperly equipped dwarf strips, and re-equips.

Dwarves get a good thought for being in uniform, a bad thought for being out of uniform.

No good or bad thoughts are created if items are not available - HOWEVER the officer then goes to the mayor to request a mandate to fill the hole in gear requirements...

**Edit add**

The inspection would need to be skipped if dwarves are being called to fight.  Having your newly called up fighters scrambling around the fort looking for an iron glove while a horde of goblins sacks the fort would be silly.

Taking the last part of the suggestion into account I could see something like this being worked into a better uniform-handling system.

Maybe they should ask the Militia commander (for millitia) and the CoG (For the guard)the required equipement instead of the mayor.

Would stripping really be necessary? My dwarves, when forgetting equipment, will just decide not to wear gauntlets (or something similar). It might be better to have them do a check to see if they are wearing the wrong stuff, or if they're just missing pieces.

I say make them strip, because that's generally how one manually corrects equipment weirdness.

If Toady finds and fixes the gear oddities that result in a dwarf wearing six boots (or whatever) then that's great, and no need to make them strip.

Well, the mayor already has a system in place to create mandates.  They are supposed to be the ones running the place, so it makes sense that they would be the one requesting items.

Additionally, wouldn't it be nice if a Mayor asks for items that are actually useful?  If there is nothing needed by the Military, then they can ask for a cat leather crossbow, or whatever, heh.

Agreed. Perhaps it could be justified under dwarven tradition, with improperly equipped dwarves being scolded for a minor bad thought and (traditionalist) nobles being appalled to see city guard wearing gear below standard.

Farmerbob: What makes you think dwarven nobles would put their own benifet and/or taste below the good of the fortress? Real-world nobles don't...

Mandate: Bridge to Nowhere (1/2)

Well, the fact that if they don't create the mandate that they are requested to create, their militia officers would then get bad thoughts towards them, eventually, after many bad thoughts, leading to the militia officer killing the noble and taking his place?

I think that the mandate should be from the militia commander, possibly approved by the expedition leader/mayor. Most nobles (except, of course, the dutyous ones) would care more about themselves than the people in the militia.

I could see it working either way.  It would be more efficient for the officers to create mandates, and perhaps it even makes sense to do it this way, but, err, these are dwarves.
