I don't believe that Toady's original intent is to make things impenetrably complicated, it just turns out that way since he's more likely to forge on if he's interested in something, and he's obviously not interested in UI. So if other people handle UI for him, it solves the problem, and I don't consider it "cheating." It prevents me from wondering which of my 87 dwarves has some obscure skill and cycling through a list every 5 minutes to find out.

And with splinterz' mod I can do a little extra cool managing.

I think it would be cool if the amount of information and the managing of it could somehow become dependent on one's manager, but that might be needlessly complicated and that's not how the base game is so whatev.

Really surprised at how many of you hardcore Therapist refusers there are out there.  As much as anything I love being able to see the stats and abilities of my dwarves growing and changing visibly.  Thanks all for voting... am finding it most interesting! :-)

I most commonly manage my dwarves by checking them upon immigration and randomly checking the idlers. Then I select who gets to be useful, who gets to be in engraving squad and who gets to die horribly the honor of serving in military.

Have been using classic up to this point.  Just downloaded Spinter's mod for the latest release.  I'm kind of excited for the animals tab.  Seems I may be able to be a bit more selective in my eugenics with that rather than autobutcher in Hack, but we'll see.

I use it occasionally just to see skill levels of all my dwarves and see their progress. Especially to see progress made by military dwarves.

I still turn labors on and off only ingame. I am kinda afraid of programs messing with my DF memory ingame, so I usually use utilities as "read only".

Managing labors basically requires only checking all new migrants and setting labors for them once.
Also disabling labors for old specialists once a much better one appears (sometimes I forget which dwarf had highest skill in a certain labor and then use Therapist to find him)
After setting labors initially the only thing you need is turning hauling on and off for the specialized dwarves depending on whether they have any important stuff to do or are just idling. This can be easily done with Shift+Enter on the hauling labor group and no Therapist needed.

I enjoy the rapid adaptability that using therapist gives you.
I wasn't even aware that a mod exist, interesting.

the UI is possibly the biggest weakness of DF and i don't think the fact that the minimal interface render some mundane tasks difficult can be considered a feature. that's just a consequence of the ui shortcoming so any 3rd party tool which can alleviate this should be a welcome addition. and DT is definitively one. i uses splinterz versions because it's the most complete, but there's so much things in it now, that for example the role tabs could be considered cheating as it does the job of thinking what's best for your dwarves in your place.
i'd rather have complete information for the dwarves (like preferences) to make an educated guess than have DT make the reasoning for me. getting this from the original ui is a chore, so in the sense of displaying dwarf info and assigning jobs, for me DT is mandatory.

I use it about 1-4 times per game year to make sure that all my dwarves are doing the right jobs.  It's too hard with the in-game tools to remember that "these 3 are my butchers/tanners" while "those 2 are my carpenters" and check whether one of the 40+ new dwarves that just arrived at the fort are specialists in something or another.

Once I get past about 50-80 dwarves, I start using it more regularly to make sure that I still have N of this labor and M of that labor.

The ability to group the dwarves in different fashions (by highest skill, by whether they have a nickname, by their happiness level) also provides ways of getting a quick overview of the health of the fort.  It's having the information in a big grid view which can be sorted that is the most useful.

No utility at <40, which is where I generally sit (FPS issues). I'll break it out once in a while when I get swamped with migrants or take a turn at a succession fort with 200, but I don't really play with it open.

The skill visualization and sorting are so much better than vanilla though.

I generally do not use therapist until my population climbs to about 50. After that point it is a neccesary utility to keep the fort on track. It also makes screening the huge migrant waves ive been getting lately.

I don't use it, because it doesn't provide what I need. I like to manage my dwarves to the best of my abilities, which means taking into account the over-all workload, abilities, preferences and character of every dwarf I got and DT lacks in a lot of ways, especially in displaying the needed informations clearly. Which is sad because it allows for much faster work allocation.

I use Therapist mostly for checking the skills of Dwarves and reassigning in mass quantities.

Also, I think at least some of the people who voted No are lying.

I use the original because it's got mac support (though I've been considering switching to the splinterz build for my windows side, dual boot can be very awesome sometimes. :P)

Also, I think at least some of the people who voted No are lying.

Why? Is it so hard to believe that not everybody has a need for it/wants to bother getting it?

I know I don't, but then I can't live without autolabor, which is a different way of doing a similar thing.
