All of those are swords except for the spears. If you found a spear, please post a screenshot for proof!

EDIT: I'm testing to see what happens when all weapons with [SKILL:SWORD] are removed from the raws. Other testers should continue as normal, though.

Regardless of further testing, swords seem to be the most common weapon chosen for the circus tent. What I wonder is what causes this behaviour.
Are swords on the top of a weapon list or positioned in a weapon list in such a way that when the game rolls for what "random weapon" is going to be in the fortress swords get chosen 9 out of 10?
Or does it depend on geography/position in the world?
Any way we can test this?

I wish we could just ask Toady.

Testing in a world without swords in the raws had yielded 2 scourges and a bow.

Bows use sword for their melee attack I think.  It may well just pick randomly among dwarf useable sharp weapons, a few types of dwarf useable sword exist, but I think there is only one type of spear and axe.

Bows do use sword for melee attacks, oddly enough.
Halberds and Great Axes also count as axes.

I wonder if there is a spear attack that uses the sword skill. Because it seems swords are the favored item of clowns.

I like to think that it was pu tthere by a legendary adventurer, who fought back the clowns plagueing the land  and slaughtered all of them in their own fort, but, realising he couldn't hold back the entierty of hell forever, and already hearing the sounds of demonic reinforcment, he sacrificed his weapon of candy to hold trhe demons off indefinitely.

Or, you know, it was placed there by demons as smuck bait.

This experiment is to test if, indeed, swords are more common. A large number of tests must be performed to ascertain this. For best results, a test should be either a 16x16 embark or an 8x16 embark. The weapon may be found by building a lever, then setting it to "link to Spear/Splke." This will bring up a list of available upright weapon traps, which if done immediately after embark can only be the adamantine weapon.

So far only around 8 total tests have been performed by everyone (at least those that have been reported.)

Dwarf usability does not seem to be an issue, as weapons foreign to dwarf culture have been reported, including the too-large-for-dwarf 2h sword.

A short sword and a scimitar so far.

Edit: In doing this, I've found an awesome site I want to exploit later.
It has bituminous, magnetite, limonite, tetrahedrite all seen from the surface.  It's reasonably flat as well, just the way I like it.
Oddly, I seem to be able to embark with wooden serrated discs @ 126 points each, but cannot make them in the carpenter's shop.

Also, 3 x two-handed swords, 2 x short swords, 1 x long sword, & 1 x scimitar.

Is it possible to build a similar structure?  By which I mean can a trap be placed such that removing a weapon sets it off, mods or otherwise?

Maybe that the dwarves never died and everyone is just shunning them.

Sadly, not possible even with mods.

It's difficult for me; three embarks crashed before I got one to load on a 16x16 site.  This one contained a two handed sword.

Try 16x8 if 16x16 gives you trouble.
