I almost don't really bother to note the name of the Fortress or my Embark Group, whatever random name comes out of the generator is fine for me.

According to my mood or the goal of the fortress, I scroll through random names until I find something suitable and possibly fix it a little if its near something hilarious. Also, a little extra effort to get names those are easy to pronounce in finnish.

I just pick fort/group names that relate to the project of the fortress in question. For example, my newest fort is named Necrobane, and was founded for the soul purpose of slaying the necromancers that will inevitably come to attack it.

Random all the way. Creating an all out aawwwwesome or ridiculous name doesn't have the charme of DF's random names the generator can come up with. The game would be a lot less amusing if you could name your artifacts and dwarf kill-titles.

I select 'random' until it spits out something amusing and/or inspiring.

Again, RNG is fun. It's nice when it spits out something cool, and I tend to let it factor into the design. My most recent was Standardrungs, a grid-based, high-efficiency fort with as much vertical organization as possible.

My current world gen has a civilization called The Aqua Boots; naming a fort Suppershow seemed to be the only real option there.

I usually use the RNG until I get names that both appeal to me and that do not contain special characters.  The latter is so that I can type the Dwarven version if I want to do so.  Very occasionally I have entered names that fit a specific theme, but these have usually worked out so poorly that I don't bother with that anymore.  Also, the vocabulary is too limited for most of the names that I have wanted to use.
