Throwing in fortress mode.
« on: June 15, 2012, 03:13:30 pm »

I think there should be throwing in Fortress mode,

Having troops carrying a backback/item of related use. Full of throwable items..
Small daggers,Spikes,Javalins.. ect.

The range would be shorter then a Cbow or bow, Which would cause more damage\penetration Making it more effective against armor.

Also due to not carrying a cbow\quiver + bolts would reduce the weight a bit, making them more usefull in metalic armor.

Training could be roughly the same as a archer, Minus the loss of objects due to the item breaking on impact.

Other then that, I think having a squad or civillian millitia of dwarfs packed to the brim with throwing weapons would be nice.
Due to throwing being my faveorite skill in Adventurer..

Throwing is currently unbalanced and needs to be fixed. Bugs are there to be squashed, not to be ported to other game modes.

Then again I quite like it. Javelins(if I don't confuse them with anything else) are meant to be thrown anyway. We could also have dwarves throwing down rocks and other dangerous stuff from the walls onto hapless enemies below. However I doubt they would cause more penetration. Even a flung Javelin won't be stronger then a crossbow bolt. Stronger then an arrow, possibly, then a crossbow, no. I think throwing should be a relatively easy to learn skill, allowing us, when time comes, to equip our melee forces with Javelins and melee weaponry, and have them throw them prior to charging into battle.

Btw, throwing is already used in tantrums, flying doors/beds ain't nice.

The advantage javelins have over crossbow bolts is that although they fly slower, they're way heavier. I also like this idea for when throwing is balanced, and I'll even throw in this idea: Dwarves shouldn't have to carry weapons/shields in their hands all the time, they should be able to sheathe, harness, stow or etc. their weapons provided they have a container (like a sheath, harness, strap, or backpack, whatever). That way our squads could be equipped with crossbows AND melee weapons. You could order them to engage with crossbows, then when the enemy closes order them to switch to a different uniform profile, and they put away their crossbows and whip out hammers and shields, voila.

I do believe Toady is working on Sheathing within the next release or so... But I agree with you,
Once implemented I think a dwarf will/should be able to throw a few things then switch out to what ever weapon he has ready..

A little unrelated but I would use crossbows for heavily armoured enemies. Javelins and the like would do little against someone in full plate mail but would be devastating to lightly armoured enemies. (Think boiled leather.)

Have the Dwarves go with the Spartan approach. Give them a bunch of javelins that they can use to throw at the enemy before closing in to engage in melee. Even if it doesn't kill a heavily armored enemy it might still bruise them or knock them down.

Throwing a spear before charging in melee is a historic tactic, but it mostly applies to army combat, not the small skirmishes found in fortress mode. It's not a 1 on 1 tactic. So I'm not sure it would be good to include it.

There's no reason not to. It might not be very efficient till you get legendary throwers who get a descent aim, but at least you have the possibility. Also when the army arc and such come it will already be there.

It might be a little overpowered, throwers would be running around with a bucket of water, destroying everything in their path.

You're assuming two things:
1. Throwing will never be un-overpowered.
2. We will ever be able to tell a dwarf, "Take  this bucket of water and throw it at the goblins! No, you fool, the WATER! Great, now I need a new bucket..."

A bucket of magma on the other hand. (Or melted fat, or stones or forgotten beast dust)

Somehow, quivers seem more likely.
