Marksdwarves won't shoot through fortification?
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:10:02 am »

First, I've already looked for solutions, I don't see any that apply.

Background:
I have 5 marksdwarves, all of them above dabbling, at least one expert, some skilled and adept as well.

Gobbos are sitting outside my fort, 2 tiles away from my fortifications due to channeling, on the same z-level as my marksdwarves.

However, when I station them behind the fortification(directly behind), they simply sit there staring at the gobbos. For !!SCIENCE!! I saved and lowered the drawbridge to check if they would ever fire. They did and died of course. I'm save-scumming since it wasn't a real attempt.

There are 65 armored gobbos and trolls outside my doorstep, and I only have 11 hand-to-hand fighters, still not that well-trained. I need these guys to step up and save my fortress!

Help!

Wow, I would really get a military early next time. I have 60 Urists on Military duty, with a backup of 17 dwarves.

I really only played 40d, where I could send 5 naked legendary wrestlers to take care of crowds...

any ideas?

Maybe provide a screenshot?

You do realise dwarfs can shoot down Z-levels from fortifications? Are your dwarfs right up against them?

Did you train them in your fort?  If not, double check to make sure they have everything they need.  A crossbow is obvious, but they also need a quiver and ammo.  Make sure you have some ammo assigned to the squad, and all your existing ammo isn't assigned somewhere else, like hunters.

I was told this but they refused to shoot, so I lowered it, thinking it would fix it. I guess I'm still having the same core issue. I'll provide a screen when I get home, but the enemies are not up against the fortification(I have a moat), they are visible, and they are only 3~5 tiles away.

I also know they can shoot their bolts since I lowered the bridge to test it and they started firing right away.

And they're literally adjacent to the fortifications? Dwarves won't shoot through them if they're one tile away. I can't imagine what the problem is otherwise, if they're properly equipped.

Yes, literally adjacent. Maybe I can pass my save to someone to take a look at it; it's my first fortress in a year or so and I've grown attached to it... I guess I could lay 60 cage traps, retreat, and lower the bridge...

anyone else?

You could just wait until they get bored and go away. You're extremely unlikely to get them all in cage traps.

Isnt your bridge blocking the vision of your dwarfs?

You said that once you lwoered it they started shooting...

Only in the sense of blocking the area in which the bridge presides. My fortifications have a clear shot to the gobbos, or so it should seem.

Hang on, is this a rising bridge in front of the fortifications? Just to be clear, I cant be sure from the previous posts in this thread that this isnt the case...

#####====o bridge o====####

# -> fortification
= -> wall
bridge = raising bridge, raising "down"

If your invaders are near the raised bridge, then there is the possibilty that your dwarves cant get a line of sight to them based on that diagram. I suggest chaging the walls for fortifications - easy if they can be smoothed and have fortifications carved in them, but also not too hard to dig out or replace with constructed fortifications, as long as there is a ditch and no ranged/flying enemies.

They are constructed walls, so I don't think I can carve into them. I can however try deconstructing walls around my square fort and hope enemies walk into those areas.
