Make them miserable. Kill there pets, unneeded family members, and puppies.

Once they get "Doesnt care about anything anymore" they will get ONLY happy thoughts, mostly.

Maxed out steel serrated disc weapon traps in every bedroom, covering all unused floorspace.

Steel is more plentiful than platinum. Serrated discs require a single bar to make, but statues require more. Masterwork steel serrated discs are very valuable and the trap can stack up to 10 of them, and the mechanism. This means you can probably produce more weapon traps and add more to the value of the rooms.

Make an extremely valuable dining room.

Put a mister in a highly trafficked area.

Make plenty of soap available for soapy baths.

Make a statue garden with some valuable (artifact if possible) statues in it.

Masterwork engravings on walls in highly trafficked areas.

Masterwork/artifact furniture (doors, etc.) in highly trafficked areas.

Those plus the nice bedrooms are my primary ways of keeping happy dwarves.

They still have at least "endure decay of pet" and "lost a pet" thoughts. I have one cat-lover who claims she doesn't really care about anything anymore, but as these thoughts show she lies. (and for some reason most pets have no coffins assigned, despite them being warm and ready, so pets rot)

Grand bedrooms for all!

[good food and booze variety helps as well].

If you have sand on the map and the bedroom layout allows it, give each bedroom a masterwork clear glass window. Dwarves get happy thoughts from admiring their own window.

The only problem with decking out bedrooms is the negative impact it can have on your touchy nobles.

O do not put anything in them, I do however make there dining room and meeting hall faaaaabulous. Gawdy even.

I see no real sense in the difference of a happy dwarf and a not so happy dwarf. It's L.I.F.E., they need to get used to. (L.osing I.s F.un E.verytime)
