Fortress guard

Do you guys treat your fortress guard as any other squad as I tend to do? Does anyone make special provisions regarding them?

Yes, They are composed of the most essential dwarves, and tend to be the ones I save in a Flood/siege/FUN situation that will kill the majority of my dwarves. No, they are not a normal squad, I do not wish to train them to kill my own dwarves. However, I may decide to equip them all with candy hammers, for hilarity value.

Nope. Everyone gets the same treatment. Grandbedrooms for all, all with the same furnishings.
Only Dwarves born in my forts can enter the fortress guard.

The fortress guard is equipped with with crossbows. They can still kill enemies but will be less likely to kill your dwarves than if they are unarmed (choke holds). It is wondrous.

I don't bother with that. Leave the shooting to the real marksdwarves. Also, crossbows are pretty damn deadly.

And why shouldn't the Fortress guard get the best weapons anyways?

Just make a prison that can house 20-100% of your Fort.

This. I usually build prison first, create fortress guard later- but when I do, I put the deadliest most hardened bunch of soldiers I find in it. That way, they only kill if it's intentional, and if they do, they damn well don't do half-jobs. For the same reason, my hammerer is my best hammerdwarf- even vampires are dead or crippled when the guy finishes with them.

For me, the Fortress Guard is the best of the best. They get the best equipment, their barracks are very close to the throne room, they are considered nobles and their dining room food and drink stockpiles only accept masterwork.

On the other hand, only heroes of previous battles and only the Fortressborn are accepted so the squad is generally understrength. But since they are the last line of defense and each of these esteemed individuals are worth a squad of common soldiers anyway, it's rarely a problem.

What is this fortress guard of which you speak?

Oh, you must mean that empty squad at the top of the list in the military screen, the one that says "captain of the guard". I don't think I've ever assigned a dwarf to it. If I want a dwarf to beat up my populous, I'll just assign a hammerer.

caddybear, do you really assign your best fighters to a squad that should never see any combat? but I guess since that means your front line troops are going to be the lower skilled leftovers, i guess maybe your fortress guard does end up seeing combat after all. Wow, that's, um, dwarfy.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Hmm the fortress guard are meant to be the best, if the filthy greenskins get into your fortress, they are the last, best hope for victory and or glory. The last line of defense and the very visible might of the fort to commoners and merchents alike.

If the fortress guard had special abilities / could auto-patrol the fortress, met traders, paraded etc that would be awesome.

This, really. If the situation is grim enough that the fortress guard needs to fight, they will be the shining hope of our nation and the hammer that breaks the spines of those demons the humans call gods.

And um, if I let the legendary guys clear up every siege, the lesser men would never see actual combat. On the plus side, my best men generally don't die to crossbow bolts from some goblin.

I should also mention I equip my best swordsman with a two handed sword and send him alone against forgotten beasts and titans. That's what a champion does. They live the highest possible quality of life, sometimes even with personal waterfalls in their rooms, but they don't live all that long. A few years, generally.

Crossbows wreak merry hell on armor and shatter bones but they generally only cause death if they strike a major artery or the brain.

My fortress guard is usually lightly armored, poorly trained, and armed with swords. Apart from acting as a police force they deal with animals bothering woodcutters and the execution of prisoners.

My fortress guard is just like any other crossbow squad, with the exception that they uphold the law as a secondary business. Since crimes are so rare, the rare witnesses can very well bring their reports to the archery range.

What is fortress guard?

A military group, led by the captain of the guard, who arrest/beat criminals and who eyewitnesses report crimes to. Mainly useful for catching vampires.

This. I use it as an honor regiment for maimed heroes. Ditto Royal Guard on those rare fortresses that have gotten that far.
