My guards usually don't have armor, or if they do it's leather or bronze. However, I almost always have the COTG wield an artifact steel mace as a mark of office. The others get steel maces. Overall, though, the guard gets little training or combat experience outside of emergency situations or snatcher catching.

I am thinking I should probably make my fortress guard the Armorsmiths, Weaponsmiths, etc and give them really top-notch armour. Then if some legendary smith wants to commit suicide by goblin thief/ambusher, they will be DENIED, and it instead will be the gobbo which commits suicide by dwarf.

There is a strong logic to arming them with steel axes or pickaxes, since I tend to find those weapons disable enemies most swiftly (they also kill enemies most swiftly). The other good equipment would be crossbows and metal bolts, since crossbow is ludicrously easy to train and can disable all sorts of dangerous enemies. The problem is, a crossbow dwarf wont fare well against an ambush, whereas an axedwarf might.

Everyone joins the military, or is a full time civilian. Civilians can't join the military (too valuable), and military Dwarves cannot join the guard. So meh.
Also no one wants to break the equality.
So what to do?
Blame the responsibility on tradition.
And so the children (who are the some of the most valuable Dwarves in the entire fort) enjoy a safe position, and listen to the quarrels of the entire fort - growing up truly worthy of their titles.
