You ever buy stuff you know you are being ripped off for?
« on: June 14, 2012, 12:29:52 am »

My goodness I love the Sims 3... I love playing it and I love buying every expansion I can get my hands on... even when I know it isn't good. However it sooo isn't worth it... It is a glitchy mess that they never fix, the new features are usually broken to heck, and it really isn't all that cheap. Yet I want them ALL!

Do you have any experiences where you bought something or wanted to buy something you knew was something you shouldn't get?

No, not really.

Closest might be my WoW subscription, which has lapsed for about half a year now. It's not so much that I don't think it's worth the money, but that I think I should be spending my time and effort on more useful things.

If you're asking about things where we ask ourselves "why the hell am I doing this and why can't I stop" then I've got a billion stories :P Just not involving spending money.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Speaking as a college student, I feel ripped off whenever I'm spending more than a dollar a meal. Though this is somewhat of a self inflicted condition.

Buying Warhammer 40.000 models always makes me feel ripped of, but that is because I have no source of income. Therefore I am very picky about buying video games. I always pick the ones which will have a lasting appeal and a great replay value.
Movie tickets.
In Sweden, movie tickets go for between $30 and $50. Feeling ripped of yet?

No you're being ripped off, their models are very heavily overpriced, but they get away with it because war gamers are used to shelling out loads of money for their hobby. Nobody outside of GW knows for sure how much it really costs them to make these models and get them onto the shelves and such, but I'm pretty sure the price of the models is at least twice what it actually takes to make them.

Of course what GW used to really love ripping people off with was the paint. From what I've heard they price it cheaper these days, but they used to take regular acrylic paint, stick in it in a little plastic pot, brand it "Vomit Brown" or some such, and price it for three times as much. These days they price their paints a bit cheaper from what I hear, but (and I don't honestly know for sure) I hear you can still get the exact same paint for much cheaper if you can figure out exactly what kind of paint (that was probably mass produced in a Chinese factory) they stuck in that little pot labelled "Vomit Brown".

Where the hell do you watch movies, son? I've never paid more than $15-16 for a ticket. I mean, unless there was some real inflation in price in the two years since I last went, but still.

I have an xbox live subscription that I almost never use. Sometimes I buy a gaming magazine but really I know there will be little of substance and they cost far too much.

Not a customer myself but I know a few who are. What about their new resin stuff? Don't mind the extra cost the resin is specially formulated.

From what I hear the detail on their models is better than most of the competition but is this true?

You need a diesel engine, and preferably a warm climate. Vegetable oil doesn't start as well. Though these days it isn't even cheaper than fuel, so meh. I dunno, maybe it's cheaper where you are?

Makes your car smell like endless frying chips though.
