ok, we should design some basic carbon nano-tube based circuitry, then build a pair of curved aluminium mirrors for a basic telescope; we need to see further before we can activly do anything productive

Hell if I know.  Pretty humourous suggestion, but utterly useless in the case of roleplaying, if indeed the whole game world was one whole huge ass field of fruit.

You create some basic circuitry from carbon, but again, you are somehow incapable of creating anything remotely approaching your level of sophistication. You should investigate that mental block when you get the chance. You build two small aluminum mirrors, allowing you to see slightly further. You're still inside the aluminum, so there isn't much of interest to see.

return to the first surface where the first spire we built is, see how the gatherer nanite is progressing.

Then examine the local magnetic field, and head North. observe the aluminium spire to ensure that we are indeed traveling in a straight line (on a flat surface, we should be able to see that single spike for a good 1/2 M or so, assuming we can detect something of size 1/10 of a degree). Once we reach the extent of our range, return back to the spire.

Build a second nanite to construct carbon based circuitry, and send the gatherer nanite to the other side, and have it gather carbon, but leave a connected set of the tubes, for later conversion to a transport network.

The gatherer nanite has collected some additional silica, as well as a few skin cells you missed. You send it down to the orange stuff to gather carbon from the cells there, and use the aluminum the miner has gathered along with the carbon circuits you fabricated to create a nanite capable of producing more simple circuit components. You could also have it construct full nanites, but you will obviously lose some flexibility.

I suppose I should probably add some hard numbers to this:

take an exploratory trip Magnetic North.

ooc:
carbon nanotubes are possibly the best current technology for post-silicon transisters available to us ; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_nanotube_field-effect_transistor
also http://www.technologyreview.com/news/426711/smallest-ever-nanotube-transistors-outperform/

my money is either on nanotubes, or switching to pure silicon photonics as the next generation technology after basic silicon.
.. perhaps even a combination of the 2.

You attempt to detect a magnetic field, but oddly enough, there isn't one. Of course there are a few local ones, but not the all encompassing, consistent one you would expect from a planet.

build a second spire near the first one. Make them a different height. Define the direction from the tallest to the shortest as "North".

Take an exploratory trip "North".

You do so, and move spire-north. The aluminum surface slowly curves over, but your small size allows you to scale it without difficulty. It then abruptly levels off to a flat aluminum surface, followed by a large expanse of some unknown substance.

Test substance in any possible way we can do so.

You take a small sample of the substance. It appears to be composed primarily of calcium carbonate.

Examine possible uses for calcium carbonate. Examine any trace elements.

In other words, not much for us. At least not until we start building ziggurats to immortalize ourselves in architecture.

Dig into the CaCO3 looking for something better.

Dig into the surroundings in general for more useful stuff.

Mine for useful stuff and attempt to get a bigger picture of our surroundings.

"Calcium carbonate is also used in the purification of iron from iron ore in a blast furnace." (from your link)
give the issues we had purifying the silicon, i suspect using CaCO3 as a flux will help that also.
