A development that could put us closer to the singularity
« on: June 13, 2012, 02:19:06 pm »

This may be the beginning of the singularity. The process sounds interesting, although the use of platinum could make it rather expensive.

This discovery is exciting for two main reasons: a) The fuel cell is completely synthetic, and b) they can be produced using low-tech, decades-old chip fabrication processes.
I figured it would be a new development, rather than implementing current, albeit outdated technology.

So...in the near-future, we'll have sugar-powered cyborgs, and Mountain Dew will be the hacker drink of choice for entirely pragmatic reasons.

....does this mean I could recharge my battery-powered electronics with my cerebrospinal fluid if I put an outlet in my spine? Probably not enough energy, sadly.

Yes, it is possible, but you have to be running on a treadmill while performing math equations in your head and eating candy to replenish your glucose as fast as your using it.

I thought our bodies used a lot of energy, and a lot was contained in food. I have no clue what the numbers are, so maybe it is a lot, but doesn't equate to much electricity.

I figured all it needed was glucose. So just turn your body into some glucose feeding tube for the battery. Get your heart pumping by running, create the brain demand by doing maths, and create the input.

Contact your physician if you experience a sudden onset of diabetes while glucose feeding. Rare but serious side effects may occur. Ask your technician before starting on glucose fuel cells.

Let's hope james Cameron's space mining corp will pay off then, so we have more platinum.

Food contains a decent amount of energy, yeah. You can light a loaf of bread on fire to release it, or you can use the complex, wacky, and utterly ridiculous chemical reactions our bodies use. Or platinum, it seems.

Oxygen loves ripping the energy out of things. That's why we breathe so much of it. And as a side note, were we on a planet with a less volatile gas composition, "fire" wouldn't exist.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
