Go for duck and cover or viking temperament. Smithing gets somwhat less useful as you go down and you'll want to have an ability that can help you out in a tight spot.

Cool, I've been wanting to see an lp of this.
I've played it to the point that I've got like 160-odd hours on it & yet I still kind of suck...
Oh well, anyways I'd say use that point on Shields.

If smithing gets more interesting later... then smithing.

I'd love to make a mechanics + Smithing combo
Nah, if you want interesting that would be Tinkering or Alchemy. (Or the mishmash of the two that is Rogue Scientist)

ANOTHER TIE! Three for smithing, three for shields!

TIEBREAKER CHALLENGE: First person to post a picture of a realistic Pokemon gets to break the tie. Even if you voted already!

Had I not been busy you'd have gotten this vote for smithing:

Duck and Cover! it is! There are too many exclamation points in the previous sentence!

Hopson finds a bunch of Stone Bolts in a barrel. These deal a reasonable amount of damage and force enemies back. Useful.

...yep.

A Blobby is kind enough to demonstrate our new skill. At the temporary cost of a little speed and attack power, we gain crushing resistance, piercing resistance, and boosts to stubbornness, armor absorption, block chance, and health regeneration. At this point we're gaining a health point every other round. Can easily be a life-saver in the right situations.

Nice treasure room here. An extra pair of striped pants, lots of food and drink, and a new crafting recipe (using tinkering, unfortunately.

Da fuq?

It is at this point that I realize that this is the commander of the 79th Platoon, which I had spent the last minute or so slaughtering in the other room off-screen. Oops.
Well, it's a fish walking on land. How hard can it be?

That's probably the most Hopson's been hit for so far O_o
It's a hard-fought battle, and Hopson loses about half his health. But finally, he prevails!

...First a cooking pot, now a broom. Ugh. Hope Brax likes household products.

:o
Found this in a bookcase. Hopson has one bar of gold already, two more and a belt will be enough.

Hardy har har :P

A quick bit of exploration later...we're done with the first floor! The only thing left up here is an anvil of Krong, which we can use now or save for later. Next time, Hopson faces new challenges and dangers on Floor 2 of the Dungeons of Dredmor!

Any chance of getting a screenshot of the character sheet at the end of every floor?

And that fish paladin is why duck and cover was needed.

Welcome back to the Dungeon! Hopson is about to take his first step on Floor 2!

Floor 2 has a strong catacombs vibe. Many of the monsters here reflect that theme. Thankfully, this area looks pretty peaceful.

Ah, our first variant of Blobby. This is a Toxiblobby, which as the name implies deals toxic damage. Thankfully, we've got some resistance, so the fight isn't very hard. However, sometimes their attak can spawn a cloud of toxic gases that deal damage just by standing in it, so be prepared to move from your current spot.

Pulling the lever from the first image opens a hidden passageway and reveals Hopson's first lockpicks. These are very useful, allowing us to open locked chests without the risk of destroying the contents via smashing. Successfully unlocking something also give us some experience.

We've seen these guys before, but this is when they "officialy" start showing up. Deth rarely misses and deals necromantic damage. Zombys are practically no threat at this point, though they are resistant to many kinds of damage and deal putrifaction damage in return. Hopson is probably the first character I've played that can resist both at this point. Pretty awesome, and makes for a somewhat easy battle.

A second variety of blobby, the Electroblobby. They deal voltaic damage. Still easy to kill.

Killing a deth earns us Level 5! Better cut this update short so we can pick a new ability.

I'm gonna put in a biased vote for Demonology, in hopes that we can reach level 3 in it eventually.
