it is a bad thing though when it diminishes the quality of life of certain people and induces discrimination. gender is an artificial construct, it should be discardable if you don't feel comfortable with it, and you shouldn't be persecuted for doing it

I wouldn't be so sure about this. I feel like someone could design a man-dress, but currently all dresses are designed for women. If one was designed for a man, it would look good on a man. A dress that is designed to exemplify a girlish figure is going to look good on one, and the same goes for a man's figure.

We call them robes.

And pretty much every asian traditional garb ever

Truth be told, if I could run around in a dress/kilt/whatever without being arrested, I probably would.

I like going around the house in a bathrobe, but it's not exactly outside attire.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Gender roles are not only barriers blocking progress and change, they typically promote prejudice and hatred towards those who do not fit within the square hole that we'd like everyone to fit into. If I have children, then if they want to play with dolls or toy soldiers, no matter their gender, then I'd say go ahead have fun.

Kaijyuu said it perfectly back on the first page. Masculinity and femininity, like all other labels, exist to describe the characteristics defined by the group of people they describe, not to dictate what those characteristics are. Personally, I see little point in even bothering to ascribe traits to the labels for groups of people; it seems to serve no purpose beyond identifying groups as Others, and thus is in opposition to understanding and accepting others. Humans are too complex to be described by a combination of trait-groups; I have never found a label which fits me perfectly, and I doubt most other have. I've seen some that come close for a single aspect of my personality, but that's about it.

Re: Kilts: I'd wear one if I thought I could do it without having to put up with constant shit from every other person I saw. That, or if I had a claymore. I guess I've got no guts; one of the bravest guys I know was a friend of mine who wore skirts practically every other day to the trashy junior high and high school we went to. I don't think I would want to deal with the sort of harrassment that comes (or came, at least) with that unless I got really worked up over something. Funny thing how I don't have a similar story about knowing a girl who took shit for wearing jeans or slacks to school, ain't it?

A girl in a mans garbs is perfectly fine, but a man in a dress basically makes everyone around him radiate with anger.

A fair world we live in, don't you think?

The world has never and will never be fair. There was a dramatic shift in the past century or so in what was viewed as acceptable for women, while no such change has done the same for men. Not very complex, except in terms of the social issues.

@blizz
The double standard isn't all that simple.

Why do women dress up in business suits and other men's attire? So they look "respectable." This implies that traditional women's attire isn't respectable. When's the last time you saw a female politician in a dress? (in the US at least; dunno about abroad) So it's not just that men who have stereotypically feminine tastes in clothing seen as "bad," it's that stereotypically feminine things in general are seen as "bad."

This is one of those things where if you fix one problem, you fix the other. So, if it becomes socially acceptable for people to wear whatever the hell they want, both men and women who want to wear feminine attire can. Maybe we'll see a female politician with a haircut different from Hilary Clinton's. Maybe Flying Dice can wear a kilt and bagpipes, and I can run around in one of those nifty Roman robes.

To be fair, we already see lots of people running around in togas. The only problem is that they tend to be drunken asshat frat boys.

Social standards are then obviously in the middle of an overhaul. Only 100 years ago women still wore dresses as ordinary clothing. Now it is a thing of festivities with jeans dominating the market. Maybe in 50 years anyone can wear anything they damn please.

Chipping in here that I exclusively wear a dress-like garment and never got any negative comments about it other than from one person: my brother.

(Also ignore my avatar, that's not me, that's an RP character... who, incidentally, refuses to wear dresses)

This is something that's always bugged me... I've never understood why people think this sort of thing is a big deal. Or even a thing at all really. I wear shorts and a T-shirt whenever possible because I find them comfortable. I am equally interested in math, writing, and origami. I enjoy walking, read something like fifteen webcomics ranging from Homestuck to Goblins to Xkcd to even Megatokyo. I hate sports and can't stand spicy or sour foods at all. I cook somewhat regularly, though I prefer baking, and am a bit of a challenge gamer, though I usually go for pacifist/minimal runs rather than the opposite. Does any of this have a thing to do with my sex or gender or whatever? No. It's all just me being me. I'm not sure whether I've revealed my sex or gender anywhere, but I'm sure that no one could guess from what I wrote above. Unless I gave them two chances.
