Stopped liking Myspace after long enough having it (plenty of friends (and family) on it, not enough interaction overall.), and having it previously bite me in the ass (massive troll attack on me and friends list alike)); Avoided Facebook like the plague, as well as Google+ and anything else that involves social networking with it. Got all kinds of ad and script blockers installed to keep my privacy and etc. (seeing as they're riddled with trackers), not seeing them is a bonus, post-removal.

As a graphic designer, it shames me that advertisements (which at times I would have an opportunity to design at times) are as bad as they are. It's so bad that, even if it would pay decently, I don't want to be carrying a stigma of 'Ad designer" on me. Plus, I sorta suck at that area of graphic design, and made the right choice to stay out of it. However, others of similar or less skill than me are still producing these monsters. Makes me want to beat them over the head sometimes.

I'm actually a little concerned as to whether or not the people who make these advertisements ever actually have to watch them. And if they understand what they've done.

That being said, some ads are freaking amazing, common, old spice never gets old.

What's fun though is when these marketers use country IP based advertisement. See, in Finland there are two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. Most of the time, if not every single time, these ads are in Finnish. However, I happen to belong to that tiny 5% minority thus those ads are completely pointless since I barely comprehend any of their content! (Although most of those 5% are bilingual, so I'm probably a .1% or something.)

I remember when youtube forced you to watch ads and removed all skip options. I would mute it, and go elsewhere until it was safe to return.
Although I will say I haven't built an immunity to ads.
I watch them.
To permanently reinforce my hatred for them.

We do have to watch them in order to make sure there aren't any foul ups (proofreading, tracking, making sure everything's in-frame) as a form of good practice, and to ensure we did our job. What bothers me even more about this is that, provided my statement is still true, they're apparently aware of what they're producing, and they still go ahead with it anyway.

Is the money really that good that they're willing to sell their creative souls for a quick buck, or is skill/talent no longer a requirement in design and just about any other job/task anymore, and we're just slaves to a system that thinks it's still relevant with today's standards (like an elderly person being "hip" and saying memes to be cool with their grandkids or the latest generation :shudder:)?

It's funny, on the rare occasion I browse a site without adblock, they can't seem to figure out where I'm from.  I've gotten ads in German, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Italian.

Maybe advertisements are subject to large amounts of executive meddling? I can't really think of a good reason beyond that. I mean, there's this jack super plumber ad in my area that runs on the television and it is VERY low budget, but I think its pretty hilarious and done in good nature. So I can't really blame keeping costs down on advertisement quality.

Or perhaps there's just a disconnect between the populace and the ad producers (with Itnetlolor as an exception), not properly understanding the target audience?

There's more than just me who understand our target audience; there are tons. We're just too strong-willed to be hired to do a good job (or in essence, the job itself at a normal expecting level), according to the standards of the clients. I recall reading up on something about someone seeing a classic bit of advertising work from the 50s or so which has a ton of charm (I think he was buying it), and when he asked what was taking it's place, he was shown a drawing of what to expect. And essentially it's the same place still moving on to the next generation as well, and what takes the classic's place looks like what can easily be made by someone new to Powerpoint. It wasn't a shoddy blueprint, it was a backlit printout (simple whiteboard backlighting fluorescent box you see at a cheap motel), at that crappy level of quality, that was taking the place of a classic piece of 50's charm (like one of those old Vegas-style/Route 66 billboard light displays).

A cool $10k $15k was invested in that. Whereas this same guy asking, a designer himself, could have done the same job for less than $100 (retaining quality of the same work, $10 tops), and still do a much better job, and actually give a crap about presenting it out of good practice.

I had to sympathize with his lost faith in mankind for that.

EDIT:

Can you justify that transition costing 10 15 grand? The owners got screwed hard.

When did that happen? I've never had ads on youtube unless I've been at someone else's house.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Found the source of what I was talking about. Good thing I remembered where I last saw it.

Turned out it was valued at 15 grand, not 10. Watching that again got me angry.

I get ads on some videos, but they're all skippable unless the ad's fifteen or so seconds long.

I would like to inquire as to whether the face-punching advertising robots can be made to play episodes of The All-Despising Baby Skull while punching in the face.

Surprised no one has yet mentioned noisy audio adverts on websites. "What's that? You got new, loud advertisements for your website? I think I'll be going elsewhere now."
