Precursor - A poorly illustrated suggestion game
« on: June 11, 2012, 07:59:22 pm »

You are a PRECURSOR. Precursor to what, you might ask? Well, you don't quite know yet. But it turns out space is rather empty, desolate, hostile, and generally just bereft of meaning, so you've got to figure that something great's going to come out of or after you.

And I mean, it's not like you've got anything better to do.

So, first things first- you need to figure out what to do first. Space is full of empty realizations like that, sadly. One of the main reasons you're going to improve it!

The kitchenette mold free, you move on to the pantry. it's nasty in there. The bacon is grazing on the lettuce. The ham is having an illicit affair with the prime rib, The potatoes see all, know all. A rat in boxer shorts smoking a foul smelling cigar is banging on a cabinet shouting about rent money.

Scrawl Meaningless cryptic symbols in the dirt
Dirt? Dirt?

The whole universe is made of dirt. At least, everyplace where it's not crushingly empty void, which is really not helping to cheer you up. Scrawling "symbols" in "dirt" would be like throwing "matter" "someplace." Actually, it'd literally be that, but replace "throwing" with "shifting ever so slightly."

Build an army of asteroid-mining, self-replicating, galaxy-traversing robots to scrawl meaningless cryptic symbols in all the dirt.

Oh, good. Great!

Let's build an army of self-replicating machines so we can emulate erosion processes everywhere! That'll surely cure your depression at the crushing pointlessness of the universe! It's not like you're explicitly trying to avoid meaningless dirt, and certainly not because it's been done.

You've really, really checked on that one, too- yes, there is most definitely meaningless dirt in the universe already. You think that part's covered. They're good.

((hey Irony, protip: Use a hard-edged tool to draw your lines if you're just filling them in with colours, and you can avoid the jaggedy white bits on the edges of your lines))

The first thing is first- in order to establish something meaningful, we are going to have to establish conflict. The universe is orderly, but stagnant. It lacks the interplay of forces that will ultimately give rise to the roots of conflict; it lacks CHAOS.

Using our presumed quasi-omnipotence, we should begin by converting the various generic balls of dirt and plasma into molten holocausts, frigid comets, and fiery novas, then proceed to smash them into one another in a  fit of reckless impulse..!

Oh, this?

This is just your Omnitool. It's a device of untold power, capable of blah blah blah. You'd hoped creating a single, powerful device capable of just about any non-specialized project would help give you some purpose.

It didn't.

On the bright side, it is more convenient than running between labs or whatever, assuming you ever find something to do in the first place.

Yeah, that'll help provide an answer to the universe's pointlessness. Terraform a bunch of rocks and then smash them together because "reckless impulse."

((This would probably look better, but for some reason I like them like this. Maybe it's almost a form of style, or just preempts the lazy quality or something. I suppose I could try some of this out if it's hurting your eyes or something.))
