War giraffes
« on: June 11, 2012, 04:10:35 pm »

This a new feature? I captured a herd of them and have started training them into war animals. The idea is...amusing...

It's called Necking.
Basically, they use their own heads as a bludgeon, in competition for a mate.
Pretty damn awesome.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Humans think that's for mating?

How do I get dwarves to retrain them while they are still semi-wild, as opposed to completely wild? So far I have them in cages, but they only train them once they revert to full wild; she's idling at other times.

Set a training zone with "i", set them to "any trainer" and release them. Eventually you'll learn enough about giraffes that they'll be domesticated. After the initial training you won't have to worry about them unless all your trainers suddenly decide to throw themselves into the magma sea.

I thought I read somewhere that you had to have the animals give birth, and the babies would be domestic.
But the adults would always slowly regress?
I dunno, I should check the wiki.

Births from domesticated animals who give birth will be tame. Trained/wild animal kids will still need a trainer assigned until domestication.

Some falcon chicks hatched in my fors and they were considered semi-wild just like it's parent.

I'm doing that but in an experiment, I trained one to war, and it became a stray war giraffe, then reverted and stampeded the poor dwarf.

So basically my issue is that they only retrain them when they become fully wild, which is impossible to maintain, as they'll be running willy nilly when they're wild. Is it at all possible to force them to train them right?

Also, one of my giraffes went missing in a week when I stuffed the eight of them in a mutual cage. I thought they couldn't kill each other in a cage?

It may have starved to death.  Pretty sure they're grazers, and grazers can't eat in a cage, right?

You're right. Uh oh. Time to get them out before they all starve.

Where's Sphalerite when you need him? *sigh*

I'm pretty sure you'll need to assign a trainer again after it's become a stray war giraffe to upkeep and improve training. As for maintaining your herd, simply wall off a pasture area with cage traps in/around it. Recatching your giraffes and training them should level your trainers and increase knowledge which will make the training quality of the animal better over time.

I wish I did that in the first place, since my now wild eagle killed one of my chickens.
