Yes, yes, the more we talk about this, the more clear the situation becomes:

We cannot beat them on land (in all likelihood), so we should sink them!  Letīs flood the seas with our ships and send their merchant marine and warships to the bottom, and then have our way with the helpless landlubbers.

Now we just have to decide who īthemī will be.

I suggest we determine whom to attack through the greatest of all tactical decision methodologies, War Roulette.

I love how they show the diagram of a bolt-action rifle for breech-loading rifles. The technology is roughly 40-50 years apart XD.

OR: We use logic and by iron and coal of the world market. Much simpler, and we'd be able to have a LARGER army to stop the world with.

But wait until thw world implodes into all-out war.

The only problem with buying coal from someone else means that we become dependant on them, and in the scenario you suggest where everything implodes that would include our operational resources leaving our military without the supplies to back it up. But you do raise a good point, if we must, we should trade as much as possible and that should include iron and coal.

Yup, giving subsidies make selling to you more profitable en thus likely. You can also buy steel directly.

Damn, this game is *FUN*!

After my previous round on a random map with easy difficulty, I decided to give a go to the scenario, and decided to play France in the Unification Scenario (So, normal difficulty).

My first move was to invade Sardinia, 'cause I needed the iron and coal. The war proceeded smoothly enough (although Rome was a bitch to take), but I lost my alliance with the Ottoman (Big deal!) and made Russia declare war on me (All they did was take an Italian province from time to time, then die the next turn).

I also manage to convince Belgium and Spain to become my colonies, and was turning an handsome profit from my foreign earning (Those gem and gold mines in my colony of North Africa were the best investment ever).

The problem is Great-Britain. The bitches turned down all my offer for alliance, and kept growing. Soon enough, they had Egypt as colony, then Sweden (cutting me from the Swedish iron). Sure enough, they declared war on me. The war was low-key for a while, a couple landing in Italy from time to time, and a lot of naval combat (Every 2 years or so I'll pop a big navy, take down theirs and blockade London. Then they'll slowly grind it down, and blockade Paris for a couple of year, then I'll plop another one).

Prussia also declared war on me, making me at war with the whole world save Austria, but Fortifications in Lorraine kept them at bay.

Then, Britain managed to colonize Portugal. I frankly didn't want to let them have a foot in Iberia so I decided to invade it ASAP. My first army manage to take the two northernmost province, but stalled in the South. I brought back most of my troops from everywhere (Mostly Italy, I let some troops in Lorraine), but still no way to break their defenses. Then, they landed in Rome, cutting me from a lot of iron. I quickly brought back the army from Portugal to kick them good (They are going to take over Sicily anytime soon anyway), but failed to do any significant progress. And Prussia used that time to invade the two provinces in Portugal I had taken from the Brits.

So yeah, it's a mess right now. I see two strategies: 1) Investing in land units, wrestling back Italy, holding the line in Spain, build a huge navy and blockade the shit out of them while I take their colonies one by one.
2) Invest everything in a sizeable navy, an attempt a landing in London. With any luck it'll be left without too many troops and I can kill the beast in one swift stroke. Does feel a bit gamey though.

gamey? why gamey? it would be gamey if britain was invading paris. but if they are in the colonies, a swift attack to the core is a reasonable strategy.

What is gamey is that taking over their capital just end the game for them. I mean, even without London, they still have that huge army and navy, they could just walk back in and take it back (Although that would leave me with time to attack their colonies.)

It would be better if taking over their capital just stopped their industrial productions for a couple of turn and allowed you to make a peace treaty with really advantageous terms. Right now, it would basically be risking my game on a throw of the dice: if I win, I'll swiftly take them over and no one will be able to oppose me afterward.

oh, right. that is true.

but what happens exactly when a major nation loses its capital? I did it once, and that nation, who still had some oversea land, just continued as usual, even fighting other wars ( not only defending, but also attacking and conquering).
maybe it was because they still had the capital of the minor nation they conquered?

I dunno, in my previous game, I had an annoucement saying something like "That nation was defeated, its province went into a state of anarchy, now is a great time to do land-grabbing." Can't remember if it had minor nations capitals. Anyway, Britain got colonies, but didn't invade any capital city.
