Conquer the primitives of Leraiulomnia and take their resources, with or without our Penian "allies".

Posting to watch. I never played this one, only the sequel (which I played the hell out of and STILL fire up occasionally).

Good job on the conquest!

To avoid annoying more potential allies, I suggest invading one of the minor nations that already dislikes us.

I'd also avoid continued military conquest until we have a bigger navy.  Our next conquest will be by sea.

1832

Everything changed for the Uristian economy once our iron mine was fired up.  Our domestic ore production at last allowed us to begin smelting steel at a satisfactory pace, and that allowed us to extend our rail network and internal transportation, which in turn brought us steadily into full access of our domestic resources.  In conjunction with this, all Uristian couples are being told to produce babies prodigiously.  Our labor force has mushroomed, and has been highly trained, and currently our labor output is mighty and commensurate with the size of our economy.

In 1828, we at last put to sea two new frigates, tripling the size of our navy.

A generous foreign aid package to Penia in 1830 brought our international relationship to a new level.  We now have a cadre of fat capitalist pigs eager to do our imperialist bidding.

Here he is in Penia, chewing on his fat cigar and negotiating a purchase of these iron-rich hills from the Penian government.  We paid about $2,500.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Within a few months, we had a corps of miners constructing our newest iron mine.

Our industrial progress in this period has been stupendous.  Iīve expanded our steel mills and timber mills, and weīre producing more manufactured goods and processed materials than ever before.  Even so, weīre struggling to keep pace with other Major nations.  The good news is I think weīve fully reversed the pear-shaped condition our economy was in back in the twenties.

Hereīs a look at our imports/exports and overseas profits.

In Penia, we went on and purchased, and have developed, the northernmost cotton fields in addition to the iron mine.  Hereīs an overview of the country:

Encouraged by the Penian experience, we began prospecting in Yubahīs southern mountain range, and would you believe what we found?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The sultan demands $10-12,000 for each of the choice mines, respectively.

Weīre actually only the second nation to begin developing abroad, although the margin between us and Siss (the first) is quite incomparable.  Siss actually has a colony now, too.  Theyīre our allies currently, but I worry about their astronomical progress.

Some technological advances we can be proud of:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In this period, Iīve increased the army a small bit, including a unit of field artillery not pictured here.  We also have some new clipper ships.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I leave off with this, our newest asset.  Sheīs got three decks of cannon, six hundred miles of rope, and three thousand rats on board.

Conquer the primitives of Leraiulomnia and take their resources, with or without our Penian "allies".
Thatīs not a bad idea, but they are the pawn of Fratzlerg, a Major nation who is also our ally.  I was eyeing up a country called Olaikale, which is the last minor nation thatīs not quite in the pocket of a major power yet.  And plus, they hate us!

As long as we get to conquer savage primitives, I don't care which ones it is. You know what they say, a new colony a day keeps Imperial Collapse away.

We must bring our glorious civilization to the rest of the world. Say, how's the new northern part of our empire doing? Are we exploiting their resources properly?

We don't want to conquer anything that we can't connect to our capital by rail. From my experience I can tell it turns land useless - can't transport any sort of resource out unless ports are used. Anything a sea away from us needs to be diplomatically coerced into joining us for us to be able to do anything worthwhile with it.

if it takes ports, build ports! what is the matter? you can even use ports as the beginning of a rail network, as long as there is a depot on the port ( took me a while to get it- for a railroad to work, there must be a depot on both ends. usually it is the capital, but a depot on a port can be useful)

Depots... on ports? Oh Armok, your knowledge is a godsend. I withdraw my advice entirely.

hehe, I know.
I stumbled on this piece of knowledge thanks to panic. I thought ports would connect stuff to the rail network, and just made a railroad from it to some nearby resources, but I kept getting nothing. so I did the only thing I could think of, and built a depot on the port. and my industry was saved!

1836
Chagrin and Constraint

Glorious Uristia has been growing steadily in economic heft, yet Iīm afraid weīre facing our second crisis period in our short history.  Things are getting out of hand!  Weigh in, countrymen, and help the beleaguered Prime Minister figure out how to get this situation under control.

Boksi:  Good question.  The port was completed on the Yangjun river some time ago, and has been an important conduit of supply since then.  I had a forester improve the hardwood harvesting and Iīve recently developed our cotton fields in that little region to Level II.  Elsewhere in the former Yangjun region everything is tranquil and totally useless to us.

Iīll begin with some of our good news:  we have added two fine new ships to the Navy.  These were laid down during our short boom of 1832-1834, when we were enjoying uncontested exploitation of our associated Minor nations.  A second Ship of the Line Enforcer, and the steam-powered Raider Lightfoot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our foreign earnings were growing through 1831-1834 at a good rate, and continue to bring us a hefty check every season, but we are no longer alone with the slithering Siss in this racket.  The gap has closed slightly, as you can see.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I just about shat a brick when I saw this:  The nerve!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Whatīs really unfortunate is that the Siss have enough cash to buy those gem mines and are doing so.  Weīre powerless to stop them (itīs a free market after all).  Perhaps we can look forward to nationalizing their assets once we colonize Yubah.

Still, weīre making a lot of money overseas.  Our earnings in one season in 1834:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Without these earnings, weīd really be broke.  As it is now, weīre running deep in the red, purchasing the raw inputs to feed the Machine.  Between raising more troops and training citizens, virtually no cash is left for foreign grants.  The tinpot rulers of Yubah and Penia are belly-aching without their grants and may think to question their loyalty if this goes on for too long.  At least Yubah.  Penia is all but joined at the hip with us now.

The political affairs map of 1834:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Council of Governors of 1835.  Notice that even the Penians voted for Ace, the seditious whelps.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At least weīve made some important domestic achievements.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The current central problem facing us is that we are paying a fair bit to import raw resources - iron, textiles, and timber, while failing to strike a fiscal balance, because that cash is so direly needed to invest in the military, infrastructure, civil development, and the occasional technological breakthrough.  Weīre not selling much because our industry is pumping out armaments, not manufactured goods for sale.  Things are frantic because weīve fallen behind other Major nations in military power.

The solution as I see it:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oleikale is the last remaining Minor nation not yet in the pocket of a Major power, and weīll probably offend nobody important if we invade there.  They have the raw resources we need, and are not that far away by sea.  As a wise Uristian once said, ĻA colony a day keeps imperial collapse away,Ļ and this is particularly true at present.

In fact, I was so sure about this plan I went ahead and declared war at the start of 1836.  Our timing was either perfect or abominable, depending on your stance, judging by this disturbing news I received the same week:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yes, this is a very ill tiding indeed.  How shall we handle this?

Lastly, this is our invasion force as it stood mustered at the barracks complex in Uristia City.  Anyone who would like to replace General Tyonma is welcome to volunteer for the honor.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As soon as the transports depart, Iīll hurriedly build up a home guard, or at least complete our protective screen of frigates who scout the coastline and prevent surprise invasion from abroad, so we wont leave the Homeland totally unprotected.  Meanwhile, we must make some cash, and fast!  That means diverting our industry away from guns and towards butter, metaphorically speaking.

You should handle it by launching an all out attack against the Oleikaleian profligates.

Did you try sticking a civilian unit on top of those plots that the enemy tries to buy up? Only one civilian unit can exist per tile, though I don't know if this applies to other countries.
