My wife loves deep fried pickles.

Let me guess, she eats them on her cracking bread? :P

Though. I would love to try some deep fried ice cream.
Hey now, don't diss crackling bread. That's good eating.

And yeah, deep-fried ice cream was good. They basically freeze it in liquid nitrogen so that it stays cold enough to not disintegrate while being fried. The result is a battered ball with a firm, but not hard ice cream ball inside. The mix of hot breading and cold ice cream is quite good.

I can't walk into the hospital cafeteria without buying some of it. I'm pretty sure they're just angling for more heart patients but I don't care, it's so delicious.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

They're called cheese curds, and when done right, they are delicious.

Apparently, they manage to deep-fry beer.

Who said DF cooking was unrealistic?
Wait, wut? Apparently, they deep fry Coca-cola, too.

Wouldn't deep frying beer remove all the alcohol? At that point it's just breaded... bread.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I've had these. I had forgotten that experience, likely because remembering it would remind me that it ended.

They're northern, though, aren't they?

Common in Wisconsin and Minnesota, mostly.  Also California; they need to be made fresh to be good, so they tend not to leave major dairy producing areas.  I'm not sure if they make them in Vermont (the other major dairy producer in the U.S.)

A thought occurred. Shouldn't all of this be in the food thread?

I don't see why we even have a food thread when there are politics threads to discuss it in.

Okay, modding DF, rename "kitchen" as "deep-fryer" :D

And to put the thread back on track (sort of) :

To enlist in the US military: You need a high school diploma or equivalent, be in reasonably good shape, and not have a serious criminal record.

With all the things it offers (a job formation, job experience, pays college education should you want it, on top of my head), the US military looks like a fantastic way to middle-class living. It fascinates me. I don't know how well it works in real-life though.

I get a lot of mixed signals regarding the status it gives too. America seems to have a mixed relationship of love and hate with its military, with both a heavy criticism of its soldiers and stories of homelessness/failure in integrating the civil society from them and all, and a certain pride in being a veteran, and big military celebrations and memorials. Perhaps it's politically divided - it's better to be a veteran in a conservative state ? I don't know. I'm curious about that.

I do find it kinda sad that it's the military of all institutions that offers all this though. I don't know. It just seems strange to me that being a soldier looks like the best way to pay your college education.

Nah. It's a good balance. America should always be a nation of productive competition imho. A two party system is a bit disappointing, but hopefully that might change. Just not completely crazy like Italy though.

Nothing all that weird about it, I think. Do valuable, difficult work, and the country pays you back for it. For me, the specialist that I am, I don't regret enlisting, although I'm not sure if I'll be staying in for a second contract either.

Exactly what the country thinks of us is, of course, a tough a question, and really affected by what soldier you're asking. I'd rather be considered the dog of war that I am, but heck if someone saying bad things about my buddies isn't a very good way to provoke my ire.

Being a soldier is definitely not a productive way to pay for college for most people. I know of a few people in my generation who have been offered full rides in exchange for service after committing themselves to ROTC, but only a few. My grandfather benefited greatly from joining the military and surviving Vietnam, but that was then and this is now.

I'd say it would probably be bad to be a veteran in a red state. After all, veteran's benefits are state handouts, and we know how US conservatives feel about the government giving people money.

That seems hypocritical.
