How did you get that map???

I killed my Mindflayer by Waking a Roman Soldier nearby who came to give the smackdown onto it, it kept trying to eat my more developed brain...

Press 'm' for the map. I chickened the fuck out from the romans this time around and just went further down instead. I am probably powerful enough to go back up and steamroll them now though, would be nice with some revenge on those bastards.

So, been trying to finish with the other classes but I run into some YASD quite often. I had a good run where I managed to get the Excalibur really early (unique twohander) but it all ended when I ran into a werewolf that infected me. I think I saw that the creator of this nifty little roguelike was here so I would like to give some feedback since I couldn't find an actual official forum on a quick google search.

1) Sorceresses really need to start with some way of dealing damage, a new low level dark magic spell or maybe a wand of some kind. Right now it is basically, find something useful on the first few levels before you run into orcs and dwarfs or restart. A bit boring.

2) It would be nice if there was a way to choose your starting skill and weapon, been trying to play a two-handed valkyrie or a spear valkyrie right now is pretty much impossible unless the RNG-god blesses you with finding one on the first two or three levels, because by the time you find one you will die to the first monster you face since you can't hit it at all. Right now you always start with the sword skill and a +0 shortsword. It would be great if you could say choose axes and start with that skill and a crude axe, or greatswords and start with like a -1 twohanded sword or something. Would allow for more builds and alot more replayability :)

3) It would be nice if you could rest while at full health, for reasons of restoring mana and waiting out hallucinations. You still run the risk of running out of food and the such so it shouldn't unbalance the game too much.

And now for some bugs I noticed.

i) Ladders seem to get in the way quite a bit, for example sometimes it is impossible to shoot a monster if there is a ladder between you and him, and also the dog seems to get stuck on the ladders quite a bit.

ii) The loot screen appears to be a bit bugged, quite often I pick up things I had specifically unticked the box for.

iii) The lightning spell can sometimes (very rarely) arc through walls/roofs/floors, I had a lightning bolt arc through the roof and aggro a shopkeeper ><

iv) Don't know if this is a bug or not but are cursed potions of healing really supposed to still heal?

I guess that is all I can come up with at this point, awesome game and well worth my two aussie bucks.

I've tweaked the penalty for unskilled attacks. Still bad to use unskilled items, but I think it's enough to make the staff unfrustrating.

(note that you may need to CTRL-reload in your browser - it should show at least build 604 in News)

It's tricky - a lot of the replay should come from the randomness of what you find early on. However, I've been meaning to differentiate Knight and Valkyrie, so now she starts with an axe and a mace, and the corresponding Axes and Clubs skills - thanks for the suggestion!

3) It would be nice if you could rest while at full health, for reasons of restoring mana and waiting out hallucinations. You still run the risk of running out of food and the such so it shouldn't unbalance the game too much.

Fixed.

i) Ladders seem to get in the way quite a bit, for example sometimes it is impossible to shoot a monster if there is a ladder between you and him, and also the dog seems to get stuck on the ladders quite a bit.

I couldn't see any problems, especially not with zapping creatures near ladders.

ii) The loot screen appears to be a bit bugged, quite often I pick up things I had specifically unticked the box for.

I couldn't see anything here either. Note that some items start off unchecked - meat and worthless glass.

iii) The lightning spell can sometimes (very rarely) arc through walls/roofs/floors, I had a lightning bolt arc through the roof and aggro a shopkeeper ><

Fixed. It was also going through doors, which was wrong.

iv) Don't know if this is a bug or not but are cursed potions of healing really supposed to still heal?

Yes, they don't heal as much though (4d4 vs. 6d4 uncursed vs. 8d4 blessed). They also never increase your max HP. Unless you have spare holy water or money for the priest to uncurse them, they're probably best just used to fix fire/acid-damaged gear.

I guess that is all I can come up with at this point, awesome game and well worth my two aussie bucks.

Thanks! I was planning to make it $4.99 or so after beta - hopefully still worth that. One trouble with attracting players is that some people find permanent death rather daunting and they're not used to it. But I think it's fundamental to the genre.

Wish Identify didn't cost so much Mana, or at least allowed me to cast it multiple times easily. I spent nearly half an hour Identifying ALL my Armour and Weapons for Unquies and Higher pricing costs only to die in the next 3mins after finishing... All the time wasted was me sitting in front of the Armoury resting for Mana regen, WITH 3 points in Wizardry and two Rings of mana Regen +1 and I was still only Identifying very slowly...

For some reason I keep coming back to this game, even though every time I play it reminds me of why I never really liked nethack. From the esoteric items (I found a whistle. Yay! What's it do? Who the hell knows!) to the mandatory but strangely useless starting pet...

I guess it speaks well for the game, anyway. There's something oddly compelling about sidescrolling RPGs.

Actually, whistles are always identifiable instantly. If it teleports your pet or makes a 'strange sound' (sorrowful in Wazhack), it is magic. Otherwise, it is tin.

And the pet gets more useful as it kills more things, at least in Nethack, the pet can save your spellcaster many times over a few games.

Is it possibly to permanently polymorph your pet into something else in Nethack/Wazhack? I never got that far in either, but it would be a cool feature if not.

In Nethack, polymorphs on pets/other creatures are permanent, so you can end up with a Master Mind Flayer or Arch Lich pet without insane amounts of difficulty.

Not sure about Wazhack, I think so, it's a long timeout at least.

Never notice a Polymorph pot losing its power on the pet. Just wish they would equip gear I gave them for extra omph

Polymorph is permanent of creatures (same as nethack). They will use some equipment if they can, though it may take a few seconds for them to think of it if they have low INT.

Lightning arcing is deliberately anti-pet, it's too powerful otherwise. Distance matters when arcing, so careful use can preserve your pet.

I'm glad to see people enjoying the game - thanks quinnr for sharing!

Haha, the more I play the more I discover the tons of little things you have in here. I put on a ring of levitation and now I can press up and down to change how high I fly. GENIUS.

Also, what do gems do? I have a lot of them.

I love this game, paid for the guild access without hesitation
Are other distribution systems (Desura,Steam) planned and will the current guild members get a copy on them?
