Do Roads Actually Have a Purpose?
« on: June 09, 2012, 02:18:26 pm »

In previous versions, they were a requirement for become the capital; this isn't the case anymore. Do they have an actual purpose other than stopping broken bolts from showing?

They also raise fort value and can be admired.  Didn't know they weren't factored into becoming the mountainhome anymore, that's interesting.

I like to combine roads with traffic designations to micromanage my dwarves' pathing. Mostly it's an asthetic choice, but value can be defined in many ways.

The feature I'd love to see for roads is to increase the speed of wagons traveling over them. Wagons are slow as hell and this seems like the perfect match and purpose to implement.

roads prevent tree growth which could block wagon access.

many things do that. A stockpile that doesn't accept anything also blocks tree growth

Not any more you don't.

Roads cover more ground for fewer blocks, so if you are trying to keep trees down on a wagon approach then roads are useful.

Used to be a great way to train up architects too. But I'm not sure if building paved roads still provides xp.

stopping tree growth with stockplies is cheap, ugly and exploity.

and unrelated to the OP's question.

Roads will typically be preffered for leaving and entering the map at least with home/human caravans. In contrast elves tend to scatter or go off into the woods.
I know this from some tests I did.

And if the entire map is a road?

I use them to line waterways so those damn mushrooms don't grow and block the flow of water to my well. Plus I put them in hallways in soil layers so I don't have the ugly cave moss growing in my halls.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

Hmm to think I've been using floors all this time for that. Roads would be more cost effective I do suppose.

If I recall correctly, roads cannot be used to plug up holes or gaps in the ground like floors can.
