Always start your embark with pond turtles as food... then you will have shells you can forbid for moods.

That used to work; just let someone eat a turtle raw, and poof:  shell!  Then I discovered when coming back to DF this spring that it no longer works.  And at least according to the wiki, you have to catch the turtle alive, and then clean it at the fishery to get a shell.

Dwarf Fortress Wiki:  Shell
Quote
A Shell is produced by catching live seafood and then processing the raw catch at a Fishery with the clean fish job. Examples of shelled critters are raw turtles, oysters or mussels. It has been reported that a cave lobster does not produce a shell. Unlike in previous versions of the game, shells are not left behind when a dwarf cooks or eats a shelled creature. Shells currently cannot be acquired via trading. Turtles, crustaceans and shellfish purchased from traders have already been processed and had their shells removed.

it was like that about a year ago, so probably more

snail men and giant snails give shells, it's pretty much the only reason they didn't go the same way as many of the other animal people in the raws

I don't believe shells will be requested if they aren't available on your map. So, you must have some kind of shelled creature somewhere.

I've never heard that rumor before.

What Toady One changed (some time during 0.31.x) is that strange moods will no longer request shells unless the dwarf in question has a personal preference for shells.

Yep,m "Snail Shell' is listed under his persona likes.

Well buck, I don't have a lot of time left, I may have to wall him up.
Hey, if you try deconstructing the workshop he is in will it reset his demand clock?

I'm pretty sure that deconstructing the workshop actually makes him go insane instantly - like when a magma forge loses power in the middle of a mood. (Haven't done any !!Science!! on it, though.)

Sounds like !!SCIENCE!! to me then... Lets find out

((2min later))

Huh.. Apparently you can't deconstruct a workshop once it is possessed...
Lets drop a ROCK On it and see what happens!!!

If you are okay with kind of .. cheating, ill copy what i did from the wiki.

I only did it only because I have no fishing available and therefor cannot obtain them, any way i know atleast.

The only downside of this method is that it only applies to newly created items, so youd best choose an item which you can create readily. (thats why i chose hoofs, because i had plenty of horses i could slaughter to create new 'hoofshells')

On to the wiki :

"Enabling Other Materials to Be Used in Moods

... you can enable other materials, like hooves or ivory to be used in strange moods instead of shells. The only effect is that the materials will be available for only moods, you won't be able to eg. make shell crafts of them.

In raw/objects/material_template_default.txt look up the material you want to enable, for example [MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:HOOF_TEMPLATE]
Add the [SHELL] to the material
If you wish to apply this change to a game in progress, remember to also alter the copy of material_template_default.txt contained in your saves folder. The change won't affect body parts that are already lying around, but will affect newly created body parts from butchered creatures. "

Hope that helps.

I actually did that for scales and chitin. I found them, especially chitin, shell like enough, and it helps when elves bring giant bugs - you'll get chitin that is otherwise useless

Make sure u have a stockpile for shells, normally u will have one for refuse, but u can never be sure. I usually have a stockpile for shell, bone and skulls close to the craftworkshop.
