Need some help
« on: June 08, 2012, 06:45:21 pm »

Hi all,

I just started with this awesome game, but after embark I got stuck.

I've been watching some tutorials and besides that there's a wiki, so I know the basics. The problem is that I can't get the woodcutter to work. I designated some trees, but my woodcutter doesn't seems to care. I re-designated some different trees but that doesn't solve anything. I use DT and I see that I have a lvl 5 woodcutter.
I'm 100% sure that I brought an axe before embark , but how can I check that? I know I can look at stuff with [k] so I checked my stockpiles, no axe there.

How can I check my dwarfs for items they carry (like weapons)? I can't find anything about it on the wiki.

ps. I can't make a wooden axe, because I made 3 beds out of the wooden carriage. So, I can use some tips.

To look at the dwarfs inventory, press 'v' while near him, then press 'i'. You should see his inventory. Check and make sure that the woodcutting labor is enabled, too. (He could be legendary at woodcutting, but if that labor isn't activated, he won't ever do it. )

You can use "z" to check your stocks and see whether you have an axe (simple wooden training axe is sufficient). Then you got to enable woodcutting for someone, every dwarf can do it, the skill just makes it faster. You can do that by pressing "v" near the dwarf, then "p" and "l" for labour. Your woodcutting dwarf should have it active by default though. If you have a military they might wear all the axes, de-equip them in the military screen ("m", then "e"). Oh and check whether there's a "D" (dump) or an "F" (forbid) next to the axe in your stock screen, might be an issue, too, but since you would have to activate those flags manually I don't think so.

Edit: Never used the Therapist, but you should be able to enable woodcutting there, too. Maybe you deactivated it by accident in DT. Does it work with 0.34.11?

Check list:

a) Have an axe? -> Get axe
b) Have woodcutting labor enabled? -> Enable labor
c) Trees accessible? -> build ramps

If I wanted to do things the "easy way", then I wouldn't be playing Dwarf Fortress.

Thanks guys, I didn't expected a response that fast :D.

Checklist:
A:x
B:v
C:v

It seems that I don't have a axe with me. I'm pretty sure I brought one with me. Before embark, I asked myself; What do I need for survival? And a axe was on top of my list.

Anyway, should I start over, or should I wait till the caravan comes by and get some wood there (to make a wooden axe). It's spring now, so it will take a while before the caravan arrives.

I have 5 copper bars with me, but I guess that I need wood to make coal before I can smith a axe. Any suggestions?

Axe material is irrelevant for cutting trees, although it matters in combat. So you can just give him a wooden training axe and he'll be fine (I know, logic):

1. Dismantle the wagon ((v)iew it then press x). This makes three logs.
2. Use one of the logs to build a carpenter's workshop (b-w-c).
3. Queue up one wooden training axe job in the workshop. Once the axe is made, use it to cut stuff - just designate trees and he'll do it automatically.

Have you actually read the original post!?

Imho you should start over, for your first fortress avoid complications like no wood. Abandon and reclaim maybe, this time with your axe.

The things you need most upon embark are 2-3 picks, 1 axe, some food and drinks to last you until your farms are set up or the caravan arrives and plump helmet spawns, those the best starting crops. Stuff like cloth, buckets, etc. is completely useless at the beginning. Some of the other seeds are nice, too, they're cheap after all.

What's your problem, dude? He's offering very useful advice on how to proceed now without an axe, instead of starting all over.

Dwarfs got sleepy so I decided to make some beds. Next time I save 1 or 2 tree trunks for 'just in case'. Lesson learned.
Thanks anyway  ;D

Berlioz, I think that I keep playing with this fortress. I started in a pretty save area, so I think I can make it till winter.
We'll see when the "fun" starts.

Wait a sec. If I abandon the fortress, can I re-embark in the same spot with a new group of dwarfs?
I put a lot of time in creating this world and digging the fort, so I don't like to give it up that soon.

Yes, you can, never done it before, but the wiki says so:

Other options:

1. Dive for the magma and make an axe.
2. Find something else to do until autumn. The dwarven caravan will probably have either wood or axes, or possibly an axedwarf whose axe you can steal.

In future, you could also try either forbidding a couple of pieces of wood or building them into something so they have to be deliberately returned to log form. One bed is sufficient, as you can designate a dormitory from it and have dwarves sleep on the floor there instead of wherever they get tired.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Why not? Don't wooden axes work any more?

It's not useful because he doesn't have any wagon wood left, as he stated in his original post.

Haha, nr. 1 is a bit tricky without proper gear. I went for option 2. Luckily, I brought all the barrels I could with me. If nothing funny happens, I think I will make it.
