I abandon, I havent been corrupted by this forum enough to slaughter my dwarves needlessly yet. I like having legendary people migrate to my fort.

Now why didn't I ever think of that? I always chose the slaughter route thinking the !!FUN!! was more valueable than a peaceful abandonment.

I always wished you could let your fort become just another dwarven halls run by the AI in the world. I mean, if it's not a failed fort, it would be nice to see it in action as an adventurer. Some day!

But until then, I like that idea of having legendary migrants show up at future forts... Sounds like a reason to have a 100+ population instead of my usual 50 and put them into legendary SOMETHING.

Actually, if you have DFhack, you CAN retire your fort by using dflair to prevent item scatter, then switching to arena, posessing someone, switching gamemode to adventure, and then killing or retiring your possessed creature on the site. That's what I do when I have a fort that's too good to lose.

I cut and paste the save into another folder called DFsaves with a brief description.txt. I have about 20+ forts stored this way.

I never have to worry about how to end my fortresses, as my enemies always do it for me.

Install a new version and start playing that cold :P
That's pretty common for me. Or else I just get bored so I create a new world and leave the old one in limbo.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I've never had the pleasure to kill off my own dwarves for fun, they usually end when someone tantrums and destroys my bridge and I was to oblivious waiting for the tantrum spiral to die down, that I forgot to create a new bridge. I cant even count how many fortresses I've lost from that

I generally just use a single fort for collective projects, trying out new ideas and so forth.

The two main fortresses I've used previously have died due to attrition. Of the entire dwarf civilization.  They keep sending them, I keep getting them killed (admittedly generally by accident and impatient construction mishaps) to fuel my latest engineering-based strange mood.

I usually just stopping playing the save til it gets all dusty, then I open it up and start pulling levers at random like a gremlin on crack.

I always assumed they were on some form of cave crack anyway, what with the alleged toothy gin they always sport: Only a friggen crack head smiles all the time.

Once I had a fortress where HFS came out, and the only two survivors were two goddamn children! Outside the magma moat, after the HFS busted down the bridges... And the HFS wouldn't path to them. And they kept getting thirsty and drinking from a pool they could still access.

I had to wait for them to starve to death 'cause I couldn't get them to suicide no matter how hard I tried.

I keep a reserve of danger room trained legendary goblin captives on hand, just in case... uh... well, I don't really know why I do it. But if a fort gets boring, I wait for autumn to roll around, give everyone crossbows, open the caverns to the numerous FBs I've been ignoring, release the legendary gobbos, and start a loyalty cascade. It's pretty glorious.

Nothing beats a good flooding. Dwarves locked in their rooms, alone or in groups. Starvation, dehydration, insanity, rage against an absurd and meaningless existence, the desperate struggle to reach that door. Tales of woe, suffering, denial and acceptance of a dwarf's place in the senselessly malevolent hands of fate.
