Co-op open world games
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:16:15 am »

Does anyone know of any co-op open world games I can do a Lets Play of with my buddy? Mercenaries 2 would be perfect, except I've heard that it doesn't work anymore, something to do with EA shutting down a server or something. Maybe it was just a rumor. Any other games like it that have co-op?

If not, are there any good co-op games out there at all? Preferably free ones.

WHY DID YOU HAVE ME KICK THEM WTF I DID NOT WANT TO BE SHOT AT.
I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

They did shut down the server, but if you're willing to do some jiggery pokery with it, I've come to understand there is a fake server you can run on your own computer to trick the game into thinking things are all still hunky dory. I believe you do have to mess with the hosts file though to point it at your own IP address rather than the official EA IP address. I've never done it myself, but I've heard success stories.

The ArmA2 mod DayZ might be interesting. It works on the free version of ArmA 2. It would pretty much be you and your bud vs. every other player out there and a minor zombie nuisance.

Secret of Mana. There's a point where the world opens up.

I think you still need Operation Arrowhead.

Well, Borderlands is a fun co-op game me and my friend used to play.  It's not exactly open-world, but it's not completely linear either.  Only problem is it is definately not free  :-\

Wait what SERIOUSLY? We don't need Combined Operations? Don't have to buy anything?

It needs Combined Operations. The free version comes with Combined Operations Lite or something, if the wiki entry I linked is to be believed.

The only thing that comes to mind is Saints Row the Third.

ArmA 2 just in general, not DayZ necessarily.

Minecraft theoretically fits the bill as well.

Nah, arma 2 free doesnt come with anything from operation arrowhead. CO Lite is what they name OA installed over arma2free. Or am i wrong (please be it that way)?

I'm wrong. You have to buy OA separately. It's cheaper than buying both ArmA2 and OA, though.

ARMA 2 itself is a more fun sandbox than DayZ, especially with the wide gamut of mods - I'm partial to Insurgency map mode.

Some of the GTA games and Saint's Row 2/3 offer some open world co-op, to varying degrees.

Watching this thread with interest ... I love finding new co-op games to play.

Posting this to mark it to be watched. I LOVE open-world games, and co-op would just add to the fun!
