I just had a thought: policing our school's internet usage would be useless. we can't even look at the Wikipedia page for Hitler (but we have a copy of mein kampf in the library), and it's slow as shit anyways.
HISTORY?! WE NEED NONE OF IT!
But, seriously. That is stupid.

As I have mentioned before, the blocking software used by schools and the like function on keyword scripts and can block things without any human input. Notifying the network administrator will likely get stupid blocks removed.

Notifying the network admin is pointless unless you're faculty, since if you do everything the students ask theres no point in filtering anything but pornography. At least as far as I know about the kinda people at my high school.

You think having Hitler blocked is stupid?
That's nothing.
The Wikipedia page for Saint George, the patron saint of ENGLAND THE COUNTRY WHERE I LIVE was blocked on our school's network. Not only that, but it was specifically blocked by the supplier of the management software. Then again, so is the TvTropes page for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, for pornography apparently. I don't even know why somebody would use their software, they can't even write the error pages right. When it says why you're blocked, it should say something like "this has been blocked because it is of type: [Reason goes in here, examples include:Pornography/illegal content/Jokes (seriously, that is a reason)]", but instead it says "Type of pornography blocked". Seriously. They can't even put words in the right order.

In total then, policing the internet is a stupid idea.

I imagine anyone would see the absurdity of blocking Hitler's wikipedia page and unblock it if notified. I imagine it is only blocked in the first place because the program is trying to block Neo-Nazi sites but being stupid about it and excising anything with Hitler's name on it.

You can get some entertainment out of the filter, though, in certain sites. Everytime someone (jokingly or not) tried to get to 4chan it threw a different reason for the block.

I know that my high school actually didn't block Bay 12. Now I only checked for a couple of seconds because, let's be real here, y'all are disturbing as hell, but it wasn't blocked.

Ours has everything blocked by default, and to get access you have to send a request blah blah everything fun gets rejected. If they reject it, it cannot be unblocked without the system admin people. If THEY reject it, you have to go to the company who made the software.

It's kind of silly how everything is autoblocked really. It makes doing anything really tedious.

Yeah it's ridiculous.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Blocking everything by default is just silly. Its more work to build a whitelist of every needed site than make a targeted blacklist, as far as I'd look at it.

One day in class I was trying to find a good website that wasn't banned, and then I tried TvTropes.

I failed that class.
