Samurai Pizza Cats has been a cult classic since as long as I can remember. I'm not sure it's the best of examples since its fanbase existed before youtube, when people still exchanged tapes. EDIT: Further proof it's not obscure.

Oh dude, I know Samurai Pizza Cats isn't obscure at all... I watched it as a young'un. HOWEVER, the original Japanese show (Title loosely translated as "Cat Ninjas? What Are You Talking About!?") was never distributed in a way that would make it available here, and is actually a completely different show that was dubbed over Gag-Reel style to create Samurai Pizza Cats. Fans who'd viewed pirated copies of the Japanese show got in contact with the character designer via his blog, and encouraged a discussion which lead to a new US DVD release of both series side-by-side, rather than separating them as had been done.

Reposting this from elsewhere... but to get on a more hopeful note, I recently caught wind of the most recent TED talk, focused on Radical Openness. Don Tapscott's bit focused on some sweeping changes coming down the pipe, enabled by our newfound global connectivity... and the bit in the middle literally made me cry a bit.

This is just another sign of the burning platform we're on societally, where the cost of staying where we are is outweighing the cost of moving forward and embracing change. The internet isn't unlike how the Printing Press enabled greater freedom of information, which the nobility and church had previously had a monopoly on. This destabilized the aging feudal system and church, who proclaimed society was collapsing, as the society everyone had known seemed to be falling apart. At the same time, the common folk suddenly had access to knowledge, and in time society at large ushered in an age of information and reason, and ultimately the Industrial Revolution.

Screw the desperate death throes of the old regime like this. This is incredible... we're rapidly approaching a huge paradigm shift, and I couldn't have asked for a more exciting part of human history to be born into.

Did you ever stop to notice that "the Internet" is only ever spoken of in singular? That's because there is no separation anywhere in the Internet. No stupid governments are insisting on dividing it into "countries" to make money and/or foster conflicts. There is no financial/situational limit to what you can experience in the Internet, therefore everyone can be everywhere. There is no need to identify yourself in the Internet, therefore you can partake/converse in a variety of interests with like-minded people without having to disclose them to non-like-minded people (which could be potentially embarrassing/estranging), effectively creating multiple identities (which is probably a huge benefit to bronies/furries/pedophiles everywhere).

The Internet is a happy place. We have to defend it.

Nope. This is humanity we are talking about. A bunch of moronic fuckers that are hungry for power.

Yeah, we all balls shit up.

Are you a moronic fucker that's hungry for power? I wouldn't say so. Neither would I say I'm one.

And yet, we are humanity.

I think a society which is based around competition encourages the mindset you're talking about, but it isn't something innately human, nor is it true for most people. That you suggest that humanity is moronic, and doomed to fail, is an observation that disproves itself by the fact that it was observed by a human.

Have faith in the potential of your fellow humans. We're pretty cool, all things considered.

Not true. Language is still a effective barrier across most of the internet.

Machine translators are increasing in efficiency very quickly, relatively speaking. The language barrier will dissolve after those become better and commonplace.

There are already games that have worked on very simple translators right in the game so there is more international interactions.

Sure, but the timeframe we're looking at is probably under five years. Maybe even less.

I'll put myself on the "moronic fucker angry for power" list, if that helps any.
Really, if somebody came up to me and promised and could prove to me that they could make me god-emperor of mankind, and would do it when I burned down an orphanage during a Christmas party, it would certainly stagger me.
For about five seconds.
That orphanage would most certainly be going down.
Because I would say that it most certainly IS human nature to look for social power. In the same way it's hard-wired into dogs as pack animals, it's an intrinsic part of humans as animals that survive best in a group. And those who are in higher positions in that group would almost certainly have a better life expectancy and general influence than somebody who is on the receiving end of all of the orders.

If you are willing to explain away a lack of empathy and... Generally being a dick for power as 'just part of my nature' and not as a flaw you should work to overcome it makes you part of the problem.

I cannot empathise with anybody dying in a fire, because I have never died in a fire.
I just said I was part of the problem.
I also said that a desire for social power is a part of nature. I'm not trying to excuse myself.

If you seriously can't empathize with that you are a psychopath.

I just said I was part of the problem.

No you did not.

I also said that a desire for social power is a part of nature. I'm not trying to excuse myself.

Okay. That's great. But many people in fact do. And it sorta sounded like you were.
