SCP has been around for years, and been known to some (like me) for years, but the popularity of Containment Breach has bumped it up from Internete Obscura to Gamer Mainstream.

So, anyone noticed any 'policing' in the past few days? I can't check, my provider is a local one that apparently didn't sign on to this.

I'd hardly expect them to be at all focused on working on this urgently. Its just more work for them with little benefit.

Time to talk to my uncle about why this is bad. Maybe even get him to read techdirt.

Just realized this as I booted it up. How many Steam and Desura users that legitimately buy their games and install them through it are going to get hit with false claims by their ISPs? Are they going to find a way to tear down Steam and Desura with this as a BS tactic? And what about other legitimately free games that use torrents as their primary means of download/installation (a fair number exist like Command and Conquer and Mechwarrior); of course with the consent of torrenting by their creators?

I hope this happens. If it does, it will open the door to anti-trust and racketeering charges, that would be pushed by groups that have the money and power to sustain them.

Because the MAFIAA is smart enough to know that you don't mess with the guy who speaks more softly and carries a bigger stick. Especially not Amazon or Google, who speak softest and carry the biggest, most tricked out sticks.

What hurts one part of the internet hurts the whole internet. If the big sites don't understand that now, they will eventually, and that's when the lobbying will start to work in our favor.

All-tech one-day strike. Everybody in the US, everybody who works for a US company, and everybody who works for someone who works with US companies. One-day strike to show how we feel, and how important a group we are.

They've been doing this for well over a year.  bout 14 months back I was accused of having pirated a game I couldn't even stand the _reviews_ for.  They said they'd turn my Internet connection back on if I signed a confession...

I just told them they'd turn the connection I was paying for back on right then or they could discuss their evidence with my lawyer in the morning.  I was back online 15 minutes later.

Simple fact is, they can't PROVE it was you without seizing your hardware, and even then they'd better actually find the data on the drive.  Why is this necessary? because MAC and IP addressing can be spoofed, or private networks hacked.  At which point I am not culpable under U.S. law for what someone else did as they were effectively stealing my network usage.

In short it's a lot of bluff, bluster, and just a hint of real threat.  Unless you're running a software bootlegging operation they're unlikely to actually attempt to acquire evidence.  You can trust me on that regard, since they have PLENTY of reasons to want a thorough look through my computer.
