It sure is fun watching the pro-copyright watchdogs dig themselves deeper, though.

What always amazes me is the incredible statistics that come out about piracy.

I tried searching to find how many people actually pirate but I kept getting reports that %90 of content is pirated. Which I have a little trouble believing.
Here, have a laugh.
You aren't going to get specific stats on that, you either get the (pretty much) fabricated  pro-copyright piracy claims, or the debatably true reports form others with either people lying or just not enough people asked to make a point.

Plus all the claims that the entertainment industry employs 8 billion people and thus needs special "protections".

Hehe, that is pretty good.

And yeah I was kinda curious how anyone could know how many copies of something existed. It's impossible.

They're hiring illegal (and to some people immoral) aliens!

All I care is that the artists can live off their work, and not have to live off selling novelty mugs and t-shirts. I think that can be accomplished without all the crazy anti-piracy antics, but at the same time I do think some forms of intellectual property rights need to exist. Piracy should be illegal, but methods to stop it shouldn't be stupid.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

The issue is that the internet effectively makes anything that can be rendered on a computer automatically post-scarce, while everything else is still very scarce indeed. Not a problem I see us solving.

Pretty much if you include DRM and stuff that makes it harder for the paying user to use, you're creating an incentive for people to pirate. So... its like kicking yourself if you're a publisher.

The way I see it the pro-copywright guys are trying to solve a problem that they have no way of ever knowing how to fix.

Theres a way to do that UV (if you mean 'ignore' instead of 'end' for piracy, which won't happen unless the copy function sporadically ceases to exist), its just that hardly anyone newsworthy bothers to change to do it. Like Valve said: "Piracy is a service problem, not a product".

If your stuff is actually interesting, and you make your stuff easier to obtain in comparison to piracy (Not goddamn overemcumbered in DRM, for starters), and about as good or better than your competitor over yonder who shattered your copy-protection for fun (Pirates, even though they lack multiplayer, probably had no problem starting up D3 as soon as it was cracked, no queues, no error 37, nada), people will more likely pay more often for the legal one over the dubious legality of the other one, if they can actually do so. The people who can't afford it wouldn't have bought it in the first place, so they aren't the problem unless your price isn't reasonable.

I have a feeling that, if a game company removed ALL the DRM on one of their games, it would be pirated about 50% faster. However, I think that their legitimate sales would go up a lot too. Hell, I'd buy it just as a thank you for removing the DRM.

I've heard of one good proposal for limiting piracy, which is to release frequent patches and high-quality free DLC that pirated versions will fail to operate well with. This provides an incentive to buy legitimate copies and by definition will not screw over anyone who does buy instead of pirate.
