... and if not, then welcome to the birth of the Corporate States of America, Mass Exodus from the USA, I guess?
FTFY.

If you're allowed to leave.
Will they try and stop me, what with the rampant facepunching because I've been denied internet access? :P

Oh, that's easy: Drive to Texas, buy a sombrero and moonwalk along the Mexican border.

Yeah, one part of a corporate dystopia I don't see happening is actually wanting you to stay. If you're poor and destitute, they'll probably be happy to send you to some other country as it's cheaper than whatever token welfare still exists.

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Corporate dystopia can't exist without its desperate labor reserves, though.  Token welfare doesn't cost them anything anyway.  Person gets welfare -> person spends welfare on buying stuff from corporations.  The unsightliness isn't a problem, either, so long as the elite can maintain their own gated communities and sprawling estates.

But all that's not even the issue anyway.  The poor and destitute aren't generally the people who try to leave, having very little financial freedom to do so.  Any mass exodus would be the educated middle class - the people who make everything work.

Dissenters already have a rough time trying to leave the country and have for years.  I've read many accounts by people who had been previously identified at a protest or otherwise noted as being an outspoken public dissenter, and found themselves excessively harassed at the border or placed on a No Fly List.

What? Why would you want the people who hate you and hate your country/corporation/whatever to stay in it?

What? Why would you want the people who hate you and hate your country/corporation/whatever to stay in it?

Because establishing this Corporate Dystopia involves a great deal of control, especially of information and public opinion.  This means making it as difficult as possible for those who are ideologically opposed to you to run around doing as they please.  This could be explored in much greater depth, but that's the most basic motivational gist of it.

Besides, would you really argue that it doesn't match the increasingly intrusive and authoritarian trends of behavior by American institutions?

As long as we can fit it in a box that shouldn't be a problem. And I have just the solution for that:

That's....that's genius. It's not that they won't hand data over, it's that they're operating in such a manner that they can't!

That would be funny if the FBI requested information from them.

"We don't have what you want. Feel free to come in and look for the information you are requesting, but we really don't have anything but this stack of heavily encrypted files that we have no key for."

The pedophiles will crawl all over that thing.

Fuck internet privacy issues, its so annoying, too much privacy and people can get away with AWWRIGHT stuff and too little and you can barely search "Pipe bomb" without getting your house raided by the police.

I don't really care what people get away with. I'm far more concerned with peeps snooping where they shouldn't really be, rather than people doing things that being snooped on would prevent.
