Top 10 Myths about DF Gameplay?
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:55:14 pm »

What do you feel are the most common bits of misinformation or pure bad advice that continually resurface on the forums?  These should be things that have been repeatedly disproved by science, or are highly doubted because of mass amounts of anecdotal experience, but continue to be conveyed anyway.  (Note:  I'm probably guilty of many).

These are the ones that I've seen recently:

1.  Booze explodes.

2.  [For some reason] the CMD is the only dwarf that should have diagnosis enabled.

3. Setting POPULATION_CAP TO 0 causes it to be ignored

4. Setting the "minimum troops" for an order to X means that the squad will do nothing until X members are available.

Edit:  5. Dwarves who are given only one type of booze will eventually stop drinking it.

There must be many more.

That setting "minimum troops" equal to or greater than the number of soliders will lead them to not eat, drink or sleep until they starve/die of thirst, as opposed to looking after themselves.

Sentients other than dwarves rise as ghosts.

Wooden shields are worse at blocking than metal ones.

Healthy dwarves need water to drink as well as booze.

That the military training rate is broken (as in too slow).

I am sure there are more that I will edit in once I remember them.

Losing isn't fun (mainly turns up on the suggestions forum).

Oh yeah, and...

Dwarves who are given only one form of booze will eventually stop drinking it.

Having less items in your game does of course speed it up.

Pathing is the most significant cause of FPS loss.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

You must laboriously assign every single dwarf a bedroom.

That's what Garath was referring to, people think atom smashing/trading away/magmafying items doesn't improve fps, but it does. I think that's even the exact same thread he's talking about.

Also many variations on "This game isn't fun because the UI sucks."  I have heard this a lot from people who tried it but were put off by the UI.
