The catacombs fit for gods megaproject, imput appreciated.
« on: June 07, 2012, 08:53:01 am »

First off, thank you for your time.

It's going to be a standard-fair burial pyramid, 31x31 at the base- but with some perks.

the entire thing will be made of gem encrusted blocks with each level being completely material-consistent, coffins, walls and all, but each with a different block and a different gem. The bottom few levels will be made of something very dull- whatever is in massive quantities on site that is otherwise useless. However, each level will be should be, in general, a little more valuable than the last, and as it goes up requirements for the quality of the make will also be added. The top will be nothing less than a masterfully created platinum block, masterfully encrusted with a masterfully cut large diamond. A few levels may be made with something zany like soap or charcoal.

Wealth for purchasing the higher-end materials not on site will be in great need. Rejected gems and blocks of insufficient quality will serve as some source of income, but also idleness will not be tolerated, and just about every industry will be created. Trade demands will be met whenever possible, as opposed to the usual if-its-convenient strategy.

Input would be nice. Dorfy ideas welcome. Thank you for your time, hopefully this isn't a half-bad idea.

Wealth is easy, especially with food, so buying caravans should be trivial. Otherwise, you can start with making a list of how much of everything you'll need for each level. I find that being prepared is the best, and planning beforehand so you can start stockpiling the materials. I've built a few pyramids in my time, and each and every single one of them blew my wildest estimations in material requirements, even more so when you decide to fill the pyramids.

Oh and, you should consider the ramps if you aren't just going for the stepped pyramid thing. Even making every wall out of the easily acquired stuff and making the ramps with the more expensive stuff isn't a bad idea.

Speaking of bad ideas, is this a bad idea? If you asked anywhere else they would probably tell you to do something less time wasting, but here on bay12 you get laughed at if your idea isn't insane enough to get you the next Urist prize in Craziness. That's like a Nobel prize. Only with menacing spikes.

Make magma flow down the sides! Or water, if you're feeling boring. Maybe you could have a moat around it to keep it safe, and fill it with many horrible traps! Put your artifacts in this pyramid! It will be the treasure chest of your civilization! Fill it with great wealth in coins, weapons and armor of the highest quality for the "afterlife" (adventurers)!

Don't take any shortcuts, either, such as

yes

Good.  If you want to make a military, would you be able to make it as close to the Egyptian military as possible?

They'd get butchered because ancient Egyptian soldiers didn't wear much armor. Desert heat, you see.

But you can always mod in the weapons, and use armor if you don't mind the disparity.

Will you post pics detailing your progress?

Are you getting peeved off because of all my nosy questioning?

Will you make candy blocks? Why not use candy blocks? What about statues? Will there be statues? Will you make an inverse pyramid that spans underground as well? Boxers or briefs? What do you think is the best solution to combat corruption in third world and developing countries? Is the European recession an indication of a coming second Depression? And lastly, are you peeved off because of NRDL's nosy questioning?

Wait, what? You can't decorate blocks (only furniture, ammo, and finished goods can be encrusted) and you can't use large gems for decoration either.

You could build gem windows around it, but you can't use large gems for those.

Was just about to mention this.

Anywho, if your embark is lacking in minerals, bulk order ores, bars, crafts, tools and ANYTHING metal. Melt it down. I've gotten wealthy by trading cloth for bars. Also, stealing the merchant's clothes help. Optional.

And no rough walls either. Everything has to be made out of bars or blocks!

A suggestion for levels in between the dirt cheap stone and the soap would be flux stone. An entire layer made out of ice just to spite physics would also make it more Dorfy. Plus, magma flowing down ice channels...

I don't have much to add regarding the wealth and building materials that hasn't been said before, but since you can't engrave constructed walls, perhaps consider adding statues? There are better ways of filling the tiles if you want wealth (such as weapon traps etc) but while they don't generally have as long descriptions as engravings, atleast they give you something to read. Everyone likes having megaproject's enterence menacing with a pair of ¤Aluminum Statue of Giant Hamster¤, right?

I agree. Having a pumpstack in the middle might be a bit ugly but it certainly makes things more interesting. I once built a medium-sized magma-spewing pyramid on top of a volcano. Fun!

Since it is a pyramid, consider adding a few trap hallways for the tombrobbers. Spikes are great but if you don't mind wasting some space, you could try something more interesting. (Perhaps a pitfall or a rolling boulder trap made with a minecart? Obsidian casting would be nice but takes too much room.)

And lastly, every pyramid needs a tomb! A room with a coffin and piles of treasure and most importantly, a walled off chamber filled with cheesemakers if the entombed dwarf gets peckish in the afterlife. Bonus dwarf points if you give them supplies for staying alive. Huge dwarf point bonus if you build it all in an evil biome and have the pharaoh and his servants resurrect. :o
