Yeah, this.  A separate enclosure from your "guards"' habitation.  They must farm their own food, and no booze.  Just water.   

Make sure to have fully equipped marksdwarves with red shirts patrol around the enclosure. 

OH, and make the prisoner camp on the surface, while your guards ( excluding the ones patrolling ) live in comfort underground.

Have them grow their own plump helmets on a small comunitary farm and have them drink cavern water.

For the water, the simplest solution is to have wells in every prison cell.

For the food supply, a clever combination of a looping track, dumping holes over food stockpiles in the prisons, and linked supply stockpiles should do the trick.  If you make some number of small (1x2 or 1x3) no-barrels plump helmet stockpiles, where each stockpile takes supplies from all of the stockpiles before it (but none after it) then the stockpiles should get filled up in order from the last stop up to the first.  Once the first stockpile gets enough it gets loaded into the minecart, which then dumps down the hole into the prison, then continues down through each stockpile, loading and dumping, until you get to the last one and loop back up to the start.

You could add a garbage dump zone next to a hole in the floor of the prison that empties out over a seed stockpile, if you want to recover the plump helmet spawn from the prisoners (you'll have to manually unforbid them after they're dumped though).

So a possible prison cell layout would look like this:

Of course I'm being nice and giving them beds for sleeping and chairs and tables for eating (another advantage is that you could make one of them into your bookkeeper by turning the cell into an office).

I'm going with the 3 square room method:
Bed
1 square farm plot
water tile fed by water system running along beneath all the cells.



Enabling farming labor on each prisoner and making him farm his own single tile of food seems a lot more dwarfy than just throwing a barrel of food down from the ceiling every now and then. Why make food for him, when I can throw the bastard in a cell with a single seed and a puddle of water, and tell him he's stuck there for the remaining hundred and whatever years of his life so he needs to hurry and make that seed grow?

The caverns make a better Australia knock-off, due to deadlier wildlife.
Besides, why should the guards to risk life and limb on patrol duty? The inmates and other beasts down there can fight it out among themselves, preventing each other from escaping. Bonus for the occasional berserk killing a whole slew of fellow prisoners.

yeah, I think that's a really good idea. Definitely more dwarfy, too. I'll be posting more here in a few days after I get this prison up and running :D

Too bad you can't take elves as slaves and set them to work in the deep, damp cold underground, far away from any sign of forest (unless you count cavern trees)

Good addition to the minecart idea! This would be a good stockpile network to ensure distribution.

(another advantage is that you could make one of them into your bookkeeper by turning the cell into an office).

Perhaps you can have a water-based system? Water channel above cells with a food stockpile next to a hole over each cell:

where 'p' are food stockpiles.

Then in the cell under the food hole would be a grate to drain the water. The food wouldn't end up in a stockpile, but if you feed your prisoners sparingly, you can work it out so that the food only goes down when they're hungry. They might enjoy the mist, though.

Simplest way to me would be a double airlock method:

Have three rows of rooms. The top row is the top airlock, the middle row is the prison room, the bottom row is the bottom airlock. When an airlock is closed, a prisoner has access to that airlock but the general fortress doesn't. When an airlock is open, a prisoner does NOT have access to that airlock, but the general fortress does. Have a lever set up such the airlocks go between two states:

  • Top airlock open, bottom airlock closed
  • Top airlock closed, bottom airlock open

Each airlock contains a stockpile of food and booze. Thus while the top airlocks are closed, you can refill the bottom airlocks. Once the top stockpiles are emptied, flick the lever and the prisoners now have access to the bottom airlock while you refill the top airlock.

Note: it's probably simpler to have the lever which controls the airlocks within the prisoner's own room, so you ensure that the prisoner is always outside of the airlocks when the states are flipped. On the other hand, that might break the spirit of them being a prisoner.
