Hilarious Falling Dwarves
« on: June 06, 2012, 10:49:39 pm »

So, I was playing DF with some dupped raws, hoping for some !!FUN!!

I dug down to the caverns with one miner, via channel downwards.
He fell in water a good 30 stories down and exploded.
I took another miner, and sent him down to dig another channel, recruiting all the other dwarves into a militia and stationing them at his starting spot. I don't know how, but the expedition leader hopped down into the death shaft with the miner, and the miner broke his arms, lower body, spine, and head. Then, the expedition leader lands ON TOP OF HIM. After 17 STORIES of falling, the expedition leader comes out without a scratch. The miner survived, too.

Wow.

Miner cushioned the expedition leader's fall?

Either that or he pleased Armok with the earlier sacrifice.

so basically you could have kittens at the bottom of dangerous shafts that could be used as safety cushions?

Playing DF is like getting into an elevator where you know it will freefall forty stories after it climbs about two.

I tried that once, over a drop of 50 z-levels. It didn't work, despite having several badgers and kittens at the bottom.

I suppose that one could mod in a cushion creature, incredibly large, friendly, but with only one body part.

Perhaps some sort of giant... sponge?  ;)

I've done some falling testing in 34.10 and found that for a 20 z-level fall, a dwarf that landed on another dwarf was stunned but took no damage. The one on the bottom did take some damage, but less than the damage received from hitting the ground directly. I haven't tried it from greater heights, but it's on my testing list.

In .31 you could. Sadly kitten drop pods are no longer viable.

Sweet! I still use .31 at least until .34 is finalized. I'm definately using this as I have way too many cats.

Actually, by testing in 0.34.10 shows that when one dwarf lands on another, the lander is stunned and takes no damage, while the landee takes some damage. I haven't tested with kittens on the bottom (yet), but I suspect they would work. I think they stopped working for a while, but the new falling system seems to have re-enabled the drop troop tactic.

Paratroopers are for elves who can't mario stomp people from 20 stories high and survive.

I assure you the Elves did not intend to fly from those bridges.

I once had a werewolf in my starting 7, gave him a pick and mined him into the ground about 17z. his was back in 34.08 I think. Possibly with Masterwork).

Anyway, decided to use him as a prisoner disposal system. Drop prisoners down there, they explode, if they survive he tears them apart. If they get lucky, they'll kill him instead.

Must have dropped about 2 dozen goblins and various other animals down there. Not a single one hit the ground. Every combat report started with "werewolf miner does horrible things to goblin". No injuries to werewolf.

Slightly off topic, but a later werewolf who immigrated in wound up in my combat pit with a flesh man (and a goblin who spent the entire time running around being a distraction)...who actually beat the everloving crud out of the werewolf. couldn't kill it, but the wolf was flashing red everywhere and the flesh man was almost untouched...after about 3 seasons mind you.
