Are they war-trainable?

Surprisingly enough, Keas. My hunter did his best to protect my starting fort, and he was nearly killed by them... talk about angry birds.
Same.  Divebombed the heck out of my construction crew and farm animals.

Interesting coincidence, I went to the zoo the day before yesterday, saw a Kea up close in the tropical birds aviary-house-thing.

Pretty bird.  Looks like a parrot.  But I was on to it's tricks.  It was a tense situation.

One minute: Giant capybaras are just big rats, right?

Next minute: Why won't they stop killing my poor war grizzlies?
Capybaras are large rodents, GIANT Capybaras are probably elephant size.

Actually, they're only a bit bigger than horses.

So says the wiki.

Giant keas.  I expected them to steal things, not fly down first a ramp and then a staircase, into my fortress dining room, and start killing Dwarves.

From Wikipedia:  Now uncommon, the Kea was once killed for bounty due to concerns by the sheep farming community that it attacked livestock, especially sheep. It received full protection only in 1986.

Giant Kea's on the other hand... Massive problem

*reads the Wiki entry*  Ah, they were feeding on the fatty backs of my Dwarves.  I understand now.   :D  Truly, I thought the real bird was somewhat smaller than it is.  I'm not sure where I got that idea.  It's about three times as large as I thought.  A giant one is probably the size of a person.

Giant keas had the habit of attacking my aboveground fort, it was pretty messy.

During the second attack one of them cut my militia commander right hand. He survived and later became the best crossbowdwarf of the whole fortress... Firing deadly giant kea bone bolts from its giant kea bone artifact crossbow. :D The best dwarf I ever had.

And Adult Lion is 200,000 cm^3

An Adult Giant Kea is 207,010 cm^3

So they're a tad bit bigger than a lion.

I'm a factor of three off again, then.  I guess I really don't want to comprehend the size of a Giant Kea.   :D

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Somebody asked if Capybaras are War-Trainable... are Giant Keas War-Trainable? Imagine a goblin siege, devastated by a flock of giant Keas. Hells, they might even steal the goblin's equipment and bring it back to the form. That would be fun.

"Most unexpected" for me typically falls into when an embark ends up with the wagon stopped in the middle of a pack of honey badgers.

Shortest lived forts ever.

Not really, you give us nothing to go on...

animals with hooves are much like a dwarf quad-wielding hammers in DF. make one of those animals large, and it becomes somewhat like a very *heavy* hammer, with a high-strength creature being the driving force behind it.

or, to simplify things... in DF, stuff with hooves are FUN! (but not usually !!FUN!! although that can be arranged also with a proper magma bath).

Hence, it was once easier to start in a evil boime compared to a good one because the evil one did not have Unicorns. Large hoofed animals with a spear on there heads. Armoks perfect animal.
