Okay, A weponsmith goes into fey mood, and I coulnd't be happier. But then he demands candy wafers, and I'm having problems getting it. I'm aware of one vein right now, but the tip pokes intp the magma sea, and my attempts at mining it ended in the death of 6 dwarves (though, not all at once). With that essentially blocked off, what can do? I know the vein must continue at the bottom, but I dont know how to mine past semi-molten rock. I tried draining the top of the sea, but it was the primary reason for the death of the 6 dwarves. I was searching around for a different vein, but now I dont have time.  What can I do?

Go up a few Z-Levels, drill over to the spire, then Z-level down.

Completely safe.

Here is a thread dealing with digging through SMR.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Your best bet will be to explore more of the magma sea, and hope it exposes another spire. That or the lowest cavern level, if you haven't already.

Are you sure the spire doesnt go on above the magma sea? If not; careful (avoiding circus) probe mining above the vein may lay bare some easier to reach candy.
Other than that your best bet would be to find more veins. I hope you like Minesweeper, cause that's what I am reminded of when digging out blue stuff (what tile is save, which one is Fun?).

Better also have a strand extractor, a craftsdwarf's workshop, a furnace operator, and a smelter nearby and ready, or you might not get that wafer ready in time.

I HAVE that, And I HAD actually managed to make one wafer, but then the flood happened, and now that wafer rests under 2 z-levels of magma.
Miners have not found anything else so far, and I had already done a significant amount of digging. I'm going to try to expose a part of teh magma sea, and PRAY that a candy vein is there and mine it within a reasonable amount of time.

If you have aquifer, cavern or river water available, you can dump water into the magma sea around the spire, the way to do this is to dig out a block of up/down stairs on the level above the magma sea, then release water into the stairs, this will turn the magma into obsidian and you can safely dig out the addy. Much faster, easier and safer than trying to drain the magma sea. And if you start with a large enough block of obsidian, you can dig up/downstairs into the obsidian and obsidianize the next layer of the magma sea as well, and dig out more candy.
When casting obsidian, always use stairs. Never channel! Stairs much safer.

Punch through a multi-z aquifer in under 5 minutes, video walkthrough. I post as /u/BlakeMW on reddit.
