Another tiny thing: I got a "animal has given birth to baby animals" notification -- in unopened, unexplored cavern layer 2.

"Townspeople will no longer no the exact locations of every monster's lair."

This may be off topic, but I still can't get DF to run on my Intel based mac. It gives me the

I even try it with the oldest version but still the same message.

Neither of those solved my problem, the first one addressed my problem but didn't solve it.
Even installed Xcode but that did not do anything.

With fresh installs of Lion and Mountain Lion, I've downloaded the Mac image from the main site (labeled Intel, format .tar.bz2), and run that icon with no problems. Are you using a different version of OSX? A quick google for your error message ("Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib") turns up http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=102264 - apparently others have had the same problem, and not just with Dwarf Fortress. Sniff around Google a bit and let us know if you still need help.

I'm playing on mac osx.  I downloaded the file that is posted on the front page of the wiki http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Main_Page the mac (intel) one.  Don't have to do anything fancy.  Just unzip that file.  Open the df_osx folder.  Then double click the file called "df" with a black rectangle icon next to it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The game will launch.

Same way it works in all the other versions.  Immigrants that are already on the way won't stop until they get to you.

Woah, those trees look very confusing. It might be prudent to simplify the trees a bit, all that information might be a stumbling block. This I say in a game where whether or not people have eyelids to wet their eyes with is calculated.

I wonder how much lumber trees will give when chopped down now.

For that matter, I wonder how many dorfs will die from having a chopped tree fall on them.

If you are looking for a good OSX tile set MAYDAY Green has one and adding it to the game is relatively easy. I think there is a youtube video on it.
