Keep a close eye for when the rotations stop - I think that would be a good sign that thier manpower is exhausted and time for an all out offensive.

SHIT

I just played for a month, and what do ya know, fuckin ctd.

I couldn't beat the Germans in Saarbrucken though and ended up pulling back and holding the Maginot... I don't think their infantry is the problem, it's their fucking invincible tanks that are at the bottom of their stack when you scroll down.....  >:(

I'm kind of burnt out with this game for today, but what should the strategy be when I decide to play again? I mean, I'm not sure what else I can do to take Saarbrucken. Our best bet might be to just hold out until maybe the Soviets invade.

Help...

Start rotating troops. Get around twenty out and put the entire lot on offensive; give them a week put them in and take another out, etc.

That's the great part about being the attacker - you can rotate troops without having to move around, and besides, it seems that you're grinding the German army to dust at least. Keep attacking, and every division destroyed will be a godsend.

What Hyo said.  Note that both you and the Germans have several divisions with next-to-no organization.  For the attacker, they will simply stop attacking when they reach zero organization, and you can send them back into the fray in a few days.  For the defender, they retreat, and are out of action until they both finish retreating into another province, and can rest up from the defense.

Besides, once you have more divisions than your commander can handle, the excess divisions stop being effective.  The AI doesn't seem to realize that, so you'll likely note that many of the German's later divisions entering the fight aren't really contributing much.

Armored, motorized, or mechanized assets would be ideal for subsequent waves of attack.  But use whatever isn't dug in elsewhere.

EDIT for newest post: Don't feel bad if your offensive fails.  It happens.  Just as long as you hurt them more then they hurt you, you're doing well.

And remember where the Germans were at this point in time historically: Drinking Pere in Paris.  You're doing well.

Oh, and I'd suggest reading this LP by Fishbreath for inspiration and ideas.  Granted, it's Arsenal of Democracy instead of Darkest Hour, but from what I can tell, it's quite similar.  Fishbreath is whipping the Germans good, despite many, many failed offensives.

^Aw crap, I totally forgot about the whole stacking penalty. Do you think if I moved some of the troops from my doomstack in Metz, into the province [that I forget the name of] to the right and attack, it would be more effective? Also, is there any difference really between supporting an attack and attacking? I know units that support an attack stay in the province they're attacking from, but is there any sort of pro or con for either?

From what I gather, units supporting an attack and units attacking are treated the same for stacking limits.  The only ways to increase stacking limits are to use a headquarters (double stacking limits for all units in same province or adjacent) and attack from multiple provinces (each province from which the attack comes has a seperate stacking limit).

I'd suggest starting with an attack that is maxed out on units, and hopefully has a field marshal leading with a HQ in the province being attacked from (but not attacking).  As units get knocked out, you either send more units into the fight or order a support attack, based on how many units you expect to remain in the province after the attack and how many units you think need to remain.

Oh hey. I just got an external fan earlier today, so I feel more comfortable playing games on my laptop. Had a close call when playing the sims, so I was kind of hesitant about playing this again because my laptop is a heap of shit and my airconditioner is broken (I may have even said this before in this thread somewhere). But this failed let's play will resume probably tomorrow night after work.

We've destroyed 2 more German units! The only thing I'm worried about is the German bombers who are continuously bombing a combination of Paris and our troops on the front.

WHY ARE YOU JUST SITTING THERE!! HELP ME!!! The British are damn useless, at least the other commonwealth nations will let me control their troops, the British just sit there on their island while our men die. Merde!

The Soviet Union has launched an invasion on the small democratic nation of Finland! Were it not for our war with the Germans, we would lend the Finns a hand.

Are partisan revolutions a really big threat right now?  And if so, do you have any spare armies to crush them with?

No, they aren't a threat at all really, I was just kind of pissed they would decide to revolt while all our entire army is fighting the battle of the century.
