So Princess Bubblegum true age is 827.

That REALLY constrains the timeline. To the extent where the Candy people only existed in 3 generations (Princess Cotton Candy, Princess Bubblegum, and The Candy People)

Or possibly 4 assuming Cotton candy princess is her grandmother... but that would only mess up the timeline more.

Everything involving spirits felt flat and uninteresting at best, or directly contradictory to established (and more interesting) ideas. For instance, we already had origin stories for bending (inspiration by bending wildlife), and the lion-turtles are pretty bland in this presentation. The only thing I enjoyed about the spirit world was the visual design, which was top-notch (except for Rava and Vatu). The Dark Avatar thing sounded a lot better going in that it wound up being. I'd have preferred enough (and different) exposition for him to gain access to all the elements than what we wound up with, since going Kaiju for the final battle felt really out of place, and Korra's astral projection thing came completely out of nowhere. I'm not sure if there's going to be continued reincarnation of Vatu!Avatar, but the setting's been so drastically altered that I think any future stories will have to be prequels to something, so it probably doesn't matter. Iroh's reappearance was... just a bad idea, all around. Also, they do an entire spirit chapter, and no Koh?

However, I liked all the non-spirit plot arcs, with the exception of the Bolin-Eska romance thing, which just carried a lot of Unfortunate Implications. The Korra-Mako relationship is the best reason to watch this show, but I don't think it's redeeming enough for me to recommend it overall. Especially because Mako never really seems to learn why he can't just go along with whatever's easiest at the moment - the closest he gets is getting glared at by Asami when Korra kisses him and he does nothing.

This is not to be taken either way, but I just want to say that's the polar opposite opinion to every other review I've seen so far for this season. Just kind of funny, is all.

i.e., hatred for Makorra, wanted more of the spirits/spirits were more interesting than the other stuff, loved Iroh's cameos, etc.

Meh, this whole spirit stuff really isn't up to par in my opinion.  Really, the whole Korra thing feels like a shortfall.

Agreed. I had hoped his plan was to free Vatu in order to use his spirit-purifying techniques on it, unaware that powerful spirits could resist it, in an attempt to end the cycle forever by changing Vatu's nature, rather than battling against it.

They kind of brought up a much more interesting motive right before the finale, but they really should have focused on his wanting to bring balance between spirits and humans, or whatever. They should have played up the zealot angle more.

I feel like Unalaq's motives weren't thought through as well as they should have been and they ended up feeling incredibly inconsistent.  It seems his motives changed every other episode without so much as the ass-covering excuse of "but this was my REAL plan all along!".  It ended up being one of the consistently weakest points of an incredibly inconsistent season.

Well, last week I had a sort of Marathon viewing of Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, all 2 and half seasons, and overall I liked it. There are obvious things that make it not as cool as the movies (animation has to be cheaper and faster, so they reuse a lot of sets, overuse the boring bamboo forests and generally just place a building in the middle of a giant flat blurry dirt floor, heh. Also bye bye fur. At least some sets are nice and detailed like the village).

What irks me the most tho, is how each character has been reduced to one or two traits (Tigress grunts and is mean, Po is a slacker, annoying and cause of much property damage, basically Pauly Shore) and in fact waay off from their personality in the movies. Understandable that they need a bigger source of silly slapstick for children, considering it's a kid show where status quo is king and all that. But still... they could have focused on how they actually were instead of reducing them to TV comedy archetypes.

I still think it's pretty cool but I'm seriously thinking about most of it as Discontinuity...

I've specifically avoided watching the TV series because I've heard nothing but bad things about it.

The problem is that it's not bad as a TV series (probably better than a lot of TV series), it would be good in a vacuum but as part of the franchise it dumbs it down a lot. I wouldn't advise you to see it unless you can doublethink it away as some unrelated kids show... it can be a bit heartbreaking.

I had a blast overall with all the funny new villains and their hamminess, but now I think I'm going to go rewatch the movies to cleanse myself from the stupid.
