'k so I
finally finished Legend of Korra. Here are my hopelessly late impressions.
First thoughts:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omgomgomgomgomgomgomgomgomg best ever
Second thoughts:
General Iroh has Zuko's exact same voice. This is extremely distracting.
Mako gets better as he goes but he still doesn't really... fit, with Korra. Stay with Asami, dude.
Bolin is awesome, but too childish for Korra. Not ready for romance at all. And not that powerful of a bender, either, which is a bit of a refreshing change from EVERYBODY being a masterful badass at their chosen style.
Korra doesn't need a love side arc at all, actually.
Grown-up Aang! And Toph! And Sokka with the exact same voice!
I hope we see more General Bumi. Also how are they generals of a fleet? Shouldn't they be admirals?
Tenzin's family. D'awww. Do want.
Hitoshi Sato should die in a fire.
Speaking of dying in a fire, the *tragic backstory* of Tarlok and Amon felt... eh. Not so well done, and Korra and Mako forgave him too easily. "Oh, your dad was a dick too? That totally excuses your own dickishness!".
Amon was a massive hypocrite and a lying liar that lies and he got what was coming to him. And I thought there was some villain decay involved at the end, too; he felt less effective as a bloodbender then as a non-bender.
Lieutenant Mustache Guy! You were so good! We never even learned your name D:
Edit: third thoughts!
I like that, with the technology level rising, so did the level of general bending skill. There are now many lightning- and metal-benders running around, and blood-bending apparently became common enough to outlaw.
Speaking of blood-bending, howcome if Amon was using it too take people's bending away Katara couldn't use it to restore it? Because it's illegal? That seems like a pretty good time to break the law to me! Though I can't remember whether a full moon had happened or not, maybe they were planning to try it.
Why was Korra able to restore bending using her Avatar Skillz, then? Super-advanced non-full-moon blood-bending? And why was Aang able to resist blood-bending using the Avatar State? We know bending works against the Avatar, so...
Also, why are benders able to bend when blood-bent? I thought there had to be movement for bending to happen?
Speaking of non-full-moon-blood-bending, though, I like the inclusion and acknowledgement of unique bending styles. Even if metal-bending is no longer unique, it's good to see other unique abilities around. Wonder what else we'll see?
So the schedule for Korra confused me at first, but now I get it. The two twenty-six episode seasons ordered are actually split into two books each, meaning we'll get four half-season books instead of three full-season books. Interesting! I liked the pacing of the first book, hopefully the shorter story arcs will lead to less filler and more awesome.
Though I have to wonder what the remaining books will be called. After the four elements and Spirits, what's left? Planet, Heart, Moon, Ocean, Avatar, Energy, Ki? Bending? I don't know, but I have the utmost faith in the writers.
