Samurai Jack Finale

It did was what always bound to happen...Jack returned to where it all started and destroyed Aku. On it's own, that's a fine ending.
I take issue however with how it all felt entirely contrary to the general themes established throughout the entire show. Good is not supposed to vanquish evil, but rather accept that yin and yang are destined to co-exist forever. Jack is not supposed to actually erase the future, he spent all that time making it better. Jack is not supposed to lose the people he cares about most, he always finds a way to save them against all odds.
I'm still glad the show got it's finale, but it just doesn't feel right.
Also, they never addressed the portal that old-Jack was supposed to guard.

Was he supposed to guard it? I thought the implication was that old-jack would defeat the guardian and use it to go back in time.

[Samurai Jack Season 5]

Okay. So context: I watched every episode live until the FUCKING Rick and Morty prank at which point I just streamed the episodes when I felt convenient. I am not happy about that, if you can't tell. I started watching broadcast television for the first time in who knows how long and then they pull that, but whatever I forgive them now.

But yeah, I finally got to the last episode. And what the genuine F****.

I won't admit it to anyone, but I only watched a sparse selection of the original Samurai Jack. But they put a ton of posters around my university for the reboot and I decided to follow it devoutly. So I watched all of Season 5.

What the FUCK was that ending. Really? I had a whole bunch I wanted to type here but I'm pretty drunk but I'm going to rewatch this sober and I'll be equally angry.

I really liked watching this final season as a -sort of new, sort of old- watcher. There were some flashbacks to things I remembered, but it was approachable as a new viewer, as well. The new season had lots of flashbacks to things I didn't know, which was really cool! But it was viewable on its own, too. We get to the final episode. Lots of allies from the past I don't recognize show up.

Okay. I was really angry at some things. Jack argues with Ashi that she should be able to fight. But she isn't able to fight until Jack literally cuts her open. What? Also Jack has to point out that she has Aku's powers. What?

Ashi was the main character of this season.

The creators of this season could not decide whether they wanted a show for new viewers, or something that would exclusively be for the people who have stuck with the show the whole way through. Instead of deciding one of the two, they tried for both. And somehow, instead of creating something enjoyable for both, they failed miserably. Like, doing that would totally be possible, but instead they failed at both of their goals.

You know what? This should most definitely be in the Drunk Thread. I'll go there now. Please ignore everything here, I'll be back with an actual analysis of the Samurai Jack S05 later.

Yes Ashi was the self-insert character who for some reason took over the show there is a reason I said people would HATE her and that the show seemed to be doing everything in its power to make the audience hate her too.

In fact hilariously she is written like a self-insert mary sue parody... almost note for note.

It is my belief though that they were originally intending to have 2-4 more episodes.

Def would have been better as a 13 episode season. Im a little surprised that they didn't go for a 3-part finale (like how they did the premiere way back when.)

I was watching the latest Aquaman animated Justice League movie, what I think was the best scene bit ever.

Aquaman is just this dude living in a lighthouse. Someone knocks at the door, and it is some marine biologist that knows about him. He gets promptly murdered, and Aquaman (or whatshisrealname... Arthur I think?) sees like a dozen assassin people in black shark armor and tridents and harpoons and shit jumping out of the ocean and sprinting towards him.

But Arthur is too quick for them, with lightning reflexes, he pushes the door closed and locks it with the tiny chain thingy. And he backs up like 2 feet, sighing in relief.

Lars finally grew a pair! So good for him!

Also, no way Fluorite is gonna fit in Lars' head without either her unfusing or Lars growing some hair out. Can he even do that now? Or is he stuck with that puffy mohawk?.

Watching Jack season 5 as a whole in the marathon, there should have been a followup for sure.

Touch back on locations which were ruined, the different ways history unfolded, vaguely familiar faces who are different due to the chains of fate following different routes but still give a nice alternative future glimpse of what Jack worked for, and I liked the idea of Odin, Shiva, and Thoth stepping in and saying "ok, this is fucked, and we shouldn't do this, but we kinda owe you one..." and he hears a familiar voice saying his name before it cuts to black.

Oh, and yeah, the Guardian was bullshit, dude said "only one man is prophesied to defeat me, and you my man, ain't that man" before adding after he beat Jack up "you can't use it yet, not yet" and looks at a future Jack through the portal.

So if Aku defeated him and Jack can't use it but Jack goes back and defeats Aku then the Guardian didn't get defeated so Jack winds up fighting him so he can use it for... what?

I was also kinda pumped for the Guardian thing and felt massively underwhelmed tha he got reduced to a background detail, but, you know, wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey, "future is not set in stone". Maybe something somewhere went drastically different from what Portal envisioned.

The Guardian I HONESTLY feel is a part that is a symptom of the fact that it was rushed. Especially if!

You pay close attention to the EARLY scenes where Jack loses the sword, you will see his location is the Guardian's lair. Suggesting that Aku destroyed the Guardian's portal last.

Later to revealed that he lost his sword at an entirely DIFFERENT location

There were no giant robots, wrecked tanks, anything around where he lost his sword.

That flashback came later. The earliest shown nothing like that, in fact it suggested he was in a cave and that he lost his sword off a cliff rather than a hole.

Are we talking things seen in Original Seasons Jack?

Sadly, there ARE some incongruencies with how S4 ended and S5 began. To speak to it being rushed, I agree--partially. The first several episodes are like genius-level awesome, and it kind of trails off after that, almost feeling like they just went back to what they knew as a crutch. Genndy definitely got pressured though. It's a sad thing, and I hate to say it, but SamJ REALLY needed those extra 2-3 episodes, not to mentioned hella more development time.
