I've got time this month.  I just finished my tower defense game, and I don't plan on starting another one until next month, when the Liberated Pixel Cup (game programming contest) programming phase opens, and I'll be busy winning it.  :)

June is art, July is code.  I'm pretty excited about it, though I am not so enthused about the art theme, I can deal with it.

So, if it were you:  JRPG sprites to work with.  I'm NOT doing a JRPG.  Arcade shooter or tower defense?

I'm not a spambot. :)  I'd love for you to follow the link in my sig and go play my new tower defense game, but that's not why I'm here.  You guys seem even nerdier than me, and that's quite a feat.  DF is a way nerdier game than I've ever written, or played. And I played DnD in the '80s.  So I'm here for opinions and conversation about games, game design, game mechanics, and programming.

So, JRPG sprites: arcade shooter or tower defense?

If the sprites are a little bit bigger than average, about the size of a Metal Slug enemy, then yeah, you could use it for Arcade Shooters.

Otherwise, TD is the obvious choice.

You've come to a place that almost universally praises game mechanics far more than graphical fidelity. So you'll be in over your head for advice and strong opinions.

I just did a TD game, so I'd like to try something different.  A short, crazy, hectic arcade shooter appeals to me right now.  Mouse controls gun, arrows (or WASD) the player.

However, I don't know what art I'll have to work with, and I won't really know until towards the end of June.  And I DO want to win the $1500 prize, and if that means doing a TD (which I just did, so I know how to do right) , then I'll do it.

There's the $1500 main prize, and a special $1500 HTML5 prize.  I was gonna write in HTML5 anyway, so I figure that gives me 2 chances to win.

If someone has a great idea of a different game I can do with JRPG sprites, let me know.  I'll have 1 month to write it, and I've written HTML5 games before (well, one) so I have some baseline code (pathfinding, map loading, etc)

Any code I write prior to July 1, I have to publish for other contestants to use.

All I have right now are metroidvanias. You could try to add a twist to it, to make it unique.

Considering that Fallout: New Vegas format was what I was going for, this is a good thing.

[FAILED] That's not going to work on me. Besides, there's someone else here, discussing what to do with a bunch of JRPG sprites. If you kill me, it won't guarantee you that nobody will know your secret.
